Job Summary: The Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery (DOHNS) generates in excess of $80M in annual charges, more than 170,000 RVUs, and over $6M in extramural research expenditures, and has an annual operating budget of approximately $20M. As a newly created department within the School of Medicine and Public Health, DOHNS is seeking a financial leader to serve as its inaugural Finance and Budget Manager to oversee the department's entire financial portfolio. The individual in this role will serve as a member of the department's administrative leadership team and will partner closely with faculty and staff to ensure financial stewardship in support of the department's clinical, education, research, and service missions.
- This position may require some work to be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location. Some work may be performed remotely, at an offsite, non-campus work location.
Key Job Responsibilities: - Serves as a subject matter expert to unit leadership regarding financial operations, status and reporting, and recommends process improvements
- Participates in the development, maintenance, and monitoring of automated financial information systems
- Identifies, verifies, and audits financial charges, credits, and authorizes payments
- May exercise supervisory authority, including hiring, transferring, suspending, promoting, managing conduct and performance, discharging, assigning, rewarding, disciplining, and/or approving hours worked of at least 2.0 FTE or equivalent employees
- Analyzes financial information and makes recommendations to unit leadership
- Plans, directs, and engages in financial and/or accounting operations for multiple areas; coordinates data management, budget preparation and management, and financial reporting efforts
- Recommends, interprets, disseminates, and implements unit-focused fiscal policies and procedures, ensuring compliance with established rule, regulations and financial guidelines

In 1930, Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery was added as a division within the University of Wisconsin Department of Surgery. In 2025, after decades of growth and achievement, the division became an independent department within the School of Medicine and Public Health. The Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery (DOHNS) includes seven divisions: otology and neurotology, laryngology, pediatric otolaryngology, comprehensive otolaryngology, rhinology and skull base surgery, head and neck oncologic surgery, and facial plastic and reconstructive surgery. We provide a full range of state-of-the-art specialized care for adults and children clinical practice sites across the Madison area, as well as clinical outreach sites across Wisconsin and Illinois. Our team of nationally and internationally renowned faculty and residents prioritizes a collaborative culture, engaging with specialists across our practice sites and throughout campus. The department offers the highest quality of education to a large variety of learners, providing training to well over 100 individuals each year through clinical rotations, extramurally funded traineeships, externships and more.
Compensation: The starting salary for the position is $90,000; but is negotiable based on experience and qualifications.

Required Qualifications: At least 3 years of experience in one or more of the following:
- Budget development/management
- Fiscal transactions
- Financial analysis/reporting
Preferred Qualifications: - At least 5 years of financial management experience in an academic medical environment
- Experience managing physician compensation
Education: Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Business, Public/Nonprofit Administration, or related field preferred
