Full Job Description
JOB SUMMARY:

Provides the field engineering and network fiber optic groups supervision, direction and coordination related to the electric distribution and network fiber optic systems and their designs. To provide engineering knowledge and technical skills required for the reliable distribution of electrical power and fiber optic communication.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Provides leadership to the field engineering team by promoting employee growth and development through daily coaching, communicating, motivating, and a learning work environment.
  • Determines proper materials and equipment for residential and commercial customers; generates contracts and reviews construction plans.
  • Establishes priority listing of customer requests and directs their assignments.
  • Oversees overhead and underground distribution system designs including layout, material specifications, contract negotiations, R.O.W. acquisition, determining cost differentials and field coordination.
  • Approves construction work orders, time sheets and other tasks of the field engineering and network fiber optic groups.
  • Coordinates with the Construction department on the implementation of large projects.
  • Conducts annual appraisals of the field engineering and network fiber optic groups using the Trakstar system.
  • Directs and approves all major street light designs and material selection.
  • Advises staking engineers as to the proper size and quantity of distribution equipment such as transformers and services.
  • Works with System Design Engineers to maintain ample supply of all conventional, single phase and three phase pad-mounted
  • Works closely with the E.I.S. department to update and ensure the accuracy of the mapping system.
  • Manages pole attachment applications and the make ready process.
  • Assists in the restoration of power outages.
  • Interviews salesmen and factory representatives in order to stay abreast of changes in materials and equipment.
  • Evaluates products and equipment such as transformers, underground apparatus, and lighting to see if they may be useful to our operation.
  • Performs annual Aid-To-Construction charges study for overhead and underground distribution construction for subdivisions and individual customers and makes recommendations accordingly.
  • Performs annual cost analysis of BrightRidge and business partner capital and maintenance projects.
  • Responds to customer and internal inquiries for information.
  • Reconciles customer complaints by serving as an advocate or mediator concerning issues related to customer services or rights-of-way.
  • Works with other departments to optimize company processes and procedures.
  • Attends schools and conferences to improve knowledge of equipment and operating methods.
  • Ability to maintain reliable, predictable, and reasonable attendance.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Must maintain a valid drivers' license from state of residence.
  • Perform other duties as requested or assigned.
  • Maintain vehicle assigned.
  • Perform role as an on-call supervisor as scheduled on a rotating basis: available for call in whenever needed.
  • Must be available for after-hours work which would include working fair share of all necessary overtime.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
  • Must have a strong understanding of BrightRidge departments, functions and procedures.
  • Must have a comprehensive understanding of BrightRidge policies and procedures relating to this position and the Engineering and Network Fiber Optic departments.
  • Must have a comprehensive understanding of local safety codes and the National Electrical Safety Code.
  • Must know the appropriate use of all equipment and technology used in the department.
  • Must be able to make decisions regarding safety, field changes and procedures if Chief Engineering and Systems Design Officer is not available.
  • Must be able to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Must be able to relate effectively and positively to all employees, customers and the general public.
  • Must be proficient in the latest version of Windows and Microsoft Office and be able to operate and enter engineering data using PC workstations and tablets.
  • Must have working knowledge of governmental records to obtain legal documents on property ownership and existing rights-of-way.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Position requires constant handling, balancing, vision, talking, hearing, depth perception and arm/hand use for machine control operation. Requires frequent carrying, forward bending, standing, sitting, reaching fine manipulation and simple grasp. Must occasionally lift up to 50 pounds and be able to ambulate up and down uneven terrain.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Most work is performed in an indoor climate-controlled office environment with appropriate lighting. Outside in varying weather conditions approximately 30% of the time and occasional exposure to voltage.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering and 4 years' experience in engineering related field strongly desired or an associate's degree in an engineering related field with 10 years' experience in electric power distribution engineering.
