Field Engineer - Substation Construction (Data Center Projects)

Department: Construction / Field Engineering

Location: Cincinnati OH, - On-site, with up to 75% travel to project sites

Job Description

The Field Engineer will support the construction and execution of high-voltage substation projects serving hyperscale and enterprise data center developments. This role is responsible for coordinating field activities, ensuring construction aligns with engineering drawings and project specifications, tracking progress, and supporting quality, safety, and commissioning efforts.

Working closely with Construction Managers, Project Managers, Project Coordinators, engineering teams, utility representatives, and subcontractors, the Field Engineer will play a key role in delivering mission-critical power infrastructure safely, on schedule, and within budget. This position offers a clear path toward advancement into Project Engineer, Project Coordinator, Assistant Construction Manager, Construction Manager, or Project Manager roles.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Support daily field operations for high-voltage substation construction projects.
  • Coordinate field activities between subcontractors, engineering teams, utility companies, and project management.
  • Review construction drawings, specifications, one-line diagrams, and project documents to ensure work is performed accurately.
  • Verify construction activities comply with engineering design, project specifications, and quality standards.
  • Assist with project scheduling by tracking daily progress, identifying delays, and communicating schedule impacts.
  • Prepare daily reports, progress updates, field documentation, and project logs.
  • Manage RFIs, submittals, field revisions, and as-built documentation.
  • Coordinate inspections with clients, utility representatives, third-party inspectors, and commissioning teams.
  • Support procurement by tracking material deliveries and verifying equipment received on-site.
  • Assist with change order documentation and quantity tracking.
  • Participate in site safety meetings and help ensure compliance with OSHA and company safety requirements.
  • Coordinate punch list completion and project closeout activities.
  • Support commissioning, testing, energization, and turnover activities.
Required Experience/Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field; equivalent field experience will also be considered.
  • 2-5 years of experience supporting electrical construction, utility, transmission, or substation projects.
  • Experience working on utility, EPC, or mission-critical construction projects.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical drawings, construction plans, and technical specifications.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Willingness to travel up to 75% based on project assignments.
Nice-to-Haves

  • Experience supporting high-voltage substation construction (69kV-500kV).
  • Experience on data center, utility, or transmission infrastructure projects.
  • Knowledge of utility interconnections and power delivery systems.
  • OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 Certification.
  • CPR/First Aid Certification.
  • Experience supporting commissioning and startup activities.
  • Proficiency with Procore, Primavera P6, Microsoft Project, Autodesk Construction Cloud, and Bluebeam Revu.
Education

Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field preferred; equivalent field experience will also be considered.
