Position Summary

The Field Automation Engineer provides automation and controls expertise for the ANDRITZ North American Field Service organization. Working in partnership with the Field Service Commissioning Lead, this position supports the installation, commissioning, startup, troubleshooting, optimization, and lifecycle service of municipal dewatering equipment while providing technical expertise in PLCs, HMIs, instrumentation, industrial networking, and control systems.

The Field Automation Engineer collaborates with the Field Service PLC Lead, Field Service and Commissioning Technicians, Engineering, and Project Management to improve automation standards, equipment performance, and customer satisfaction across the North American installed base.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Field Automation & Commissioning
  • Support the installation, startup, commissioning, testing, and optimization of ANDRITZ equipment and automation systems.
  • Configure, troubleshoot, and modify PLC, HMI, VFD, instrumentation, and industrial communication systems.
  • Perform electrical and controls verification prior to equipment startup.
  • Support Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT), Site Acceptance Testing (SAT), commissioning, and customer performance testing.
  • Troubleshoot complex electrical, automation, instrumentation, networking, and process control issues.
  • Maintain software backups, configuration files, and commissioning documentation.

Automation Engineering & Field Support
  • Partner with the Field Service PLC Lead to support Field Service and Commissioning Technicians during installation, startup, commissioning, troubleshooting, and customer support activities.
  • Provide advanced technical support for PLCs, HMIs, instrumentation, VFDs, industrial networking, and control systems.
  • Collaborate with Engineering and Project Management to resolve field automation issues and implement technical improvements.
  • Mentor and support Field Service and Commissioning Technicians on automation systems, troubleshooting techniques, and best practices.

Continuous Improvement
  • Develop and maintain PLC, HMI, and automation standards, software documentation, and commissioning procedures.
  • Identify recurring field issues and partner with Engineering to implement permanent corrective actions.
  • Support automation upgrades, modernization projects, and aftermarket control system improvements.
  • Capture lessons learned and recommend improvements to field execution, technical documentation, and commissioning practices.

Customer Support
  • Serve as the automation technical resource during field assignments and customer startup activities.
  • Develop and maintain strong customer relationships through professionalism, responsiveness, and technical expertise.
  • Provide operator and maintenance training on automation systems and equipment operation.
  • Prepare detailed field service reports documenting work performed, software changes, findings, and recommendations.
  • Support emergency service calls and remote technical assistance as required.

Safety
  • Follow all ANDRITZ and customer safety policies and procedures.
  • Maintain required OSHA and company safety certifications.
  • Wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as required.
  • Promote a culture of safety during all field activities.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications
  • Associates degree in Automation Engineering, Engineering Technology, or equivalent combination of education and industry experience.
  • Three (3) or more years of experience in industrial automation, controls engineering, systems integration, commissioning, or field service.
  • Strong PLC programming and troubleshooting experience.
  • Experience with HMIs, instrumentation, VFDs, and industrial communication networks.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, P&IDs, engineering drawings, and control system documentation.
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a cross-functional team.
  • Willingness to travel approximately 100% throughout North America.

Experience with one or more of the following:

  • Schneider Electric / Modicon

  • Process instrumentation
