Job Description:

The Federal Tax Managing Director serves as a senior leader within the Lead Tax Services practice, providing strategic tax advisory services to a diverse portfolio of clients while driving practice growth, technical excellence, and exceptional client service. This role combines deep federal tax expertise with executive leadership responsibilities, including client relationship management, business development, talent development, and engagement oversight.

As a trusted advisor, the Managing Director partners with clients to navigate complex federal tax matters, identify planning opportunities, manage risk, and deliver innovative solutions aligned with their business objectives. This leader collaborates across service lines to provide integrated solutions, advances Tax Transformation initiatives, and plays a key role in the continued growth and success of the practice.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a trusted advisor to clients by providing strategic guidance on complex federal tax matters, legislative developments, and tax planning opportunities.
  • Lead the review, oversight, and final approval of complex federal tax compliance and consulting engagements, ensuring technical accuracy, quality, and effective risk management.
  • Research and interpret federal tax legislation, regulations, and emerging issues to develop practical, value-added solutions for clients.
  • Build, maintain, and expand executive-level client relationships by understanding business objectives and identifying opportunities to deliver additional value.
  • Drive business development initiatives by leveraging internal and external networks, industry relationships, referrals, and thought leadership to generate new business opportunities.
  • Develop and execute strategies to expand the Lead Tax Services practice while contributing to overall firm growth objectives.
  • Collaborate with professionals across Tax, Audit, Consulting, and Advisory practices to deliver integrated, multidisciplinary client solutions.
  • Champion Tax Transformation initiatives by incorporating technology, automation, data analytics, and process improvements into client engagements and internal operations.
  • Lead, coach, and mentor tax professionals, fostering technical excellence, collaboration, and career development while building high-performing teams.
  • Oversee engagement planning, staffing, budgeting, realization, profitability, and resource utilization to ensure successful engagement delivery.
  • Maintain responsibility for engagement quality, client satisfaction, regulatory compliance, and adherence to firm policies and professional standards.
  • Contribute to the firm's technical leadership through internal training, knowledge sharing, thought leadership, and participation in professional organizations.
  • Meet or exceed business development, revenue, profitability, and utilization goals established for the role.

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting
  • Active CPA license required
  • Ten (10)+ years of progressive federal tax experience within a public accounting environment.
  • Significant experience leading complex federal tax compliance and consulting engagements for middle-market and large clients.
  • Demonstrated expertise in federal income taxation, tax research, tax planning, and technical consulting.
  • Proven experience building and managing executive-level client relationships.
  • Strong business development experience with a demonstrated ability to originate and expand client relationships.
  • Experience leading, developing, and mentoring high-performing tax professionals.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication, presentation, and executive relationship management skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, client-focused environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Taxation, Accounting, or Business Administration.
  • Experience leading large, multi-disciplinary engagement teams.
  • Experience implementing tax technology, automation, or Tax Transformation initiatives.
  • Industry specialization in one or more sectors served by Crowe.
  • Active involvement in professional organizations and recognized technical thought leadership.

The wage range for this role takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to skill sets; experience and training; licensure and certifications; and other business and organizational needs. The disclosed range estimate has not been adjusted for the applicable geographic differential associated with the location at which the position may be filled. At Crowe, it is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the range for their role and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case. A reasonable estimate of the current range is $173,200.00 - $365,300.00 per year. This role follows a hybrid work model for candidates located near a Crowe office. Candidates who are not within commuting distance of a Crowe office may be considered for a remote work arrangement, subject to business needs.
