Job Description:This job is responsible for providing leadership, technical direction and oversight to a team delivering technology solutions. Key responsibilities of the job are to provide oversight of the design, implementation, and maintenance of complex computer programs, align technical solutions to business objectives, and ensure that coding practices/quality comply with software development standards. Job expectations include conducting multiple software implementations and applying both depth and breadth in knowledge of several technical competencies.
Workday Position Summary
Responsible for designing and developing complex requirements to accomplish business goals. Ensures that software is developed to meet functional, non-functional, and compliance requirements. Ensures solutions are well designed with maintainability/ease of integration and testing built-in from the outset. Possess strong proficiency in development and testing practices common to the industry and have extensive experience of using design and architectural patterns. At this level, specializations start to form in either Architecture, Test Engineering or DevOps. Contributes to story refinement/defining requirements. Participates and guides team in estimating work necessary to realize a story/requirement through the delivery lifecycle. Performs spike/proof of concept as necessary to mitigate risk or implement new ideas. Codes solutions and unit tests to deliver a requirement/story per the defined acceptance criteria and compliance requirements. Utilizes multiple architectural components (across data, application, business) in design and development of client requirements. Assists team with resolving technical complexities involved in realizing story work. Designs/develops/modifies architecture components, application interfaces, and solution enablers while ensuring principal architecture integrity is maintained. Designs/develops/maintains automated test suites (integration, regression, performance). Sets up and develops a continuous integration/continuous delivery pipeline. Automates manual release activities.
Responsibilities
- Lead design, development, testing, and production rollout of features across distributed Java services.
- Produce technical designs for fault-tolerant, scalable services - defining idempotency, retry logic, and failure handling before coding begins.
- Write, review, and optimize Spring Boot backend code for high-throughput, low-latency transaction processing.
- Map end-to-end data movement across internal services and external providers, including transformation, validation, and reconciliation logic.
- Define API contracts, versioning, security (OAuth2/JWT), and backward compatibility for internal and partner consumption.
- Set coding standards, run design and code reviews, and unblock engineers on architecture and integration problems.
- Coach mid- and junior-level developers on distributed systems patterns and messaging best practices.
- Align with product owners, architects, QA, and downstream teams on scope, dependencies, and timelines.
- Drive technical discussion in sprint planning, refinement, standups, and retrospectives.
- Identify and prioritize refactoring, resilience improvements, and legacy-to-microservice or MQ-to-Kafka migration work.
Required Qualifications
Experience level: 15+ years in software engineering with 5+ years leading a feature team, squad, or technical workstream in an Agile environment.
Java engineering depth: Expert-level Java (Java 17/21), Spring Boot, and Spring frameworks for building high-throughput, low-latency backend services.
Distributed systems: Hands-on design of distributed, fault-tolerant architectures - service decomposition, statelessness, idempotency, retries, circuit breakers, and eventual consistency.
REST API design: Building and consuming RESTful APIs, including versioning, OpenAPI/Swagger contracts, authentication (OAuth2/JWT), and rate limiting.
Messaging - IBM MQ: Production experience with IBM MQ (queues, topics, message persistence, transactional messaging) for guaranteed delivery in financial transaction flows.
Messaging - Apache Kafka: Designing event-driven pipelines with Kafka - topics, partitions, consumer groups, offset management, and exactly-once/at-least-once semantics.
Data flows / integration: Modeling end-to-end data flows across services and providers, including data mapping, transformation, and reconciliation between systems.
Service provider integration: Integrating with external/third-party service providers, handling SLAs, timeouts, failover, and contract changes.
Financial domain: Working knowledge of financial services concepts - Contact Management, Profile Management, payments, Fraud, ledgers, settlement, regulatory/audit requirements, and data sensitivity (PII/PCI).
Engineering practices: CI/CD, Git, automated testing (JUnit, Mockito), code review ownership, and production support/on-call for critical systems.
Leadership: Technical decision-making, mentoring engineers, breaking epics into features/stories, and coordinating across product, architecture, and QA.
Desired Qualifications
Cloud & containers: Kubernetes, Docker, and a major cloud (AWS/Azure/GCP), including deploying Java microservices at scale.
Observability: Distributed tracing and monitoring (Splunk, Dynatrace, Grafana, Prometheus, ELK) for latency and failure diagnosis in message-driven flows.
Kafka ecosystem extras: Kafka Streams, Schema Registry (Avro/Protobuf), Kafka Connect, and Confluent Platform.
Data stores: SQL (Oracle, PostgreSQL) and NoSQL (MongoDB, Cockroach), plus caching (SingleStore).
Resilience patterns: Saga pattern, CQRS, event sourcing, and API gateways .
Security & compliance: Secure coding, encryption in transit/at rest, and familiarity with SOX, PCI-DSS, or similar regulatory frameworks.
Certifications: AWS/Azure Solutions Architect, Confluent Certified Developer, or Spring Professional.
Domain depth: Prior experience in banking, capital markets, or payment processing platforms.
Migration experience: Modernizing legacy monoliths to microservices, or migrating from IBM MQ to Kafka (or running both in hybrid).
