Your Responsibilities

As a Tactical Factory Automation Engineer at Des Moines Works located in Des Moines, IA, you will provide day-to-day technical support for manufacturing operations by partnering with production, maintenance, engineering, and skilled trades teams to resolve equipment and process-related issues. This role is responsible for supporting electrical systems, PLCs, control programs, automation technologies, tooling, and manufacturing equipment through troubleshooting, system updates, and continuous improvement activities. You will help develop and deliver technical training for maintenance skilled trades employees, building capabilities in electrical systems, automation, reliability practices, and advanced diagnostics. The position also supports building automation controls, asset connectivity, and digital monitoring solutions in collaboration with the Facilities Engineering team, while helping advance machine connectivity and condition-based maintenance strategies. Success in this role requires strong troubleshooting abilities, the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced manufacturing environment, effective communication skills, and a commitment to safety, teamwork, and continuous learning.

• Ability to develop and deliver technical training that builds skilled trades capabilities in automation, electrical systems, and advanced diagnostics.
• Knowledge of industrial networking, building automation systems, and digital manufacturing technologies.
• Strong collaboration and communication skills with the ability to work effectively across production, maintenance, engineering, facilities, and skilled trades teams.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities, respond to changing business needs, and execute work independently in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.

What Makes You Stand Out
• Experience with PLC programming, HMI development, and industrial control systems, including troubleshooting and optimization of automated manufacturing equipment.
• Knowledge of machine connectivity, industrial networking, and communication protocols such as Ethernet/IP, IO-Link, Analog and digital systems
• Experience developing and delivering technical training programs.
• Familiarity with asset monitoring, condition-based maintenance, and predictive technologies that improve equipment reliability and performance.
• Experience supporting building automation systems, facility controls, and digital monitoring solutions.
• Demonstrated ability to manage multiple technical support requests while independently prioritizing work and driving issues to resolution.
• Experience with supporting capital projects, equipment installations, system integrations, or coordination with contractors, suppliers, and external engineering resources.
• A proactive continuous improvement mindset with a passion for leveraging technology, data, and automation to solve manufacturing challenges and improve business results.

Education

Ideally you will have a degree or equivalent related work experience in the following:
• Bachelor's Degree or experience in Electrical, Controls, Computer Engineering, or related fields.
