What You'll DoRun the Department- Direct day-to-day production, distribution, and operations of the Fabrication Department - metal cutting, forming, machining, and welding
- Develop plans for efficient use of materials, machines, and personnel to meet production goals
- Ensure department milestones and goals are met while adhering to approved budgets
- Work closely with other department managers to ensure scheduled repairs and projects are on track
- Conduct daily and weekly safety and production meetings with department employees
- Ensure shop floor, pipe yard, and steel inventory racks are clean and organized at all times
- Ensure all vehicles, equipment, and facilities are properly maintained
Manage People & Culture- Lead by example and hold employees accountable to company standards
- Teach and develop employees to grow in their career paths
- Conduct timely employee performance evaluations
- Ensure all company policies are followed within the department
- Foster a culture of safety, efficiency, and continuous improvement
Handle Financials & Customer Work- Estimate costs of fabrication projects for Morris, Inc. and outside customers
- Create customer invoices for retail services performed by the Fabrication Department
- Use company software to track materials and supplies for customer and internal jobs
- Manage materials inventory and order products as needed for common stock and special projects
- Work with division management to build, follow, and analyze a department budget
- Recommend policies and programs that maintain and improve competitive position and profitability
- Perform other duties as assigned
What You'll Need- High school diploma or equivalent; additional technical or business education a plus
- Hands-on experience in welding, machine shop operations, and metal fabrication
- Proven management skills - you've led people and run a department, not just worked in one
- Knowledge of welding and machine shop equipment operation and maintenance
- Some knowledge of relevant codes and standards (preferred but not required), including OSHA, MSHA, and AWS inspection procedures.
- Experience with invoicing and inventory tracking software
- Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills
- Ability to read and manage a budget and analyze departmental financials
- Excellent communication skills - with your crew, peer managers, and customers alike
Where You'll WorkYou'll be based in our fabrication shop in Fort Pierre, South Dakota, overseeing a hands-on team in an active production environment. This role requires regular presence on the shop floor - you'll be visible, accessible, and engaged with your team daily. Safety is non-negotiable, and you'll set the tone for the entire department.
