Position Overview

Primary Purpose of Position

Reporting to the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs, with a secondary reporting relationship with the Associate Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs and Dean of Students, the Executive Director for Housing and Residence Life serves as the Vice Chancellor's chief advisor and senior liaison to campus community partners regarding university housing facilities and residence life. The Executive Director for Housing and Residence Life serves as a member of the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs' Senior Leadership Team and supports the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs in the overall administration of the Division of Student Affairs enterprise comprised of a community of approximately 500 professional and student employees who steward fiscal resources in excess of $90 million and approximately 1,000,000 square feet in facilities to support student success. The Executive Director for Housing and Residence Life will develop, lead and collaborate with university partners to elevate the university's impact as it attains an R1 designation.

The Executive Director for Housing and Residence Life provides strategic leadership for a team of educators and services that support the security and safety for nearly 7000 residential students and coordinates off-campus housing opportunities for students in the Office of Housing and Residence Life: Housing Facilities, Residential Education and Conduct; Administrative Services and Off-Campus Living and Partnerships. The Executive Director for Housing and Residence Life prepares recommendations to the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs regarding policy issues and other issues impacting the quality of residential students at North Carolina A&T State University and supports the University's financial stability through residential student retention, housing occupancy, budget planning and facilities management, managing a $20 million auxiliary.

Primary Function of Organizational Unit

The Office for Housing and Residence Life provides students with on-campus housing that supports their health, safety and wellbeing and success. Housing and Residence Life (HRL) assists students fulfill their educational goals and ambitions through quality education, social, and cultural programs that promote community within residence halls. HRL provides student employment and residential communityopportunities that allow them to build professional skills, embrace diversity, and develop lifelong relationships.

Minimum Requirements
  • Master's degree in Higher Education Administration, Student Affairs Administration, Business Administration, Public Administration, Counseling, College Student Personnel, or a closely related field.
  • Seven years of progressively responsible professional experience in university housing and/or residence life.
  • Demonstrated experience in crisis management, emergency response in a college or university setting.
  • Exceptional interpersonal communications skills and ability to cultivate strong partnerships with diverse stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully lead, develop and manage professional staff.
  • Demonstrated leadership, sound judgment, political acumen, and discernment during challenging circumstances.
  • Strong background in policy development and compliance and knowledge of local, state and federal laws and proceedings related to college students (e.g. U.S. Constitution, Title IX, Title VI, etc.)


Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education
  • Previous experience serving as a Chief Housing Officer, or equivalent senior leadership role.
  • Previous experience in housing and residence life at a public R1 university with a large residential population.
  • Prior experience leading residence hall maintenance, construction, renovation, expansion, or housing master planning initiatives.
  • Strong background with public-private partnership (P3) housing projects and third-party management relationships.
  • Active engagement or leadership in College and University Housing Organizations and/or Facilities Management Organizations.
