We are seeking the next leader of AgeBetter, an organization that has served the Madison community for more than 20 years. AgeBetter is best known for its SAIL (Supporting Active Independent Lives) program and, more recently, Safe at Home. The ideal candidate will be passionate about bringing people together, meeting individuals where they are, and fostering a strong sense of community and belonging. This leader will bring a strong background in leadership and relationship-building, along with experience identifying and securing donations and grants to strengthen and expand the programs and services AgeBetter provides.

Position Overview:

The Executive Director (ED) serves as the face of AgeBetter and is responsible for managing the programs offered within this organization including the SAIL and Safe at Home programs. This work includes membership recruitment, outreach, fundraising, new service development, operations and administration, and working with the Board on strategic planning and finance. The position requires working with a wide range of local and, in some cases, national organizations and institutions, and with the residents of Dane County. The ED will be responsible for establishing and managing a small team environment including hiring and managing support staff.

This position reports to the Board of Directors.

Essential Responsibilities (not meant to be an all-inclusive list):
  • Assure the delivery of outstanding member services.
  • Maintain and expand membership through recruitment of new members and membership renewals.
  • Collaborate with the Board of Directors to develop and maintain strategic and tactical plans to guide the organization.
  • Recruit and manage volunteers participating in SAIL programs; determine and supervise volunteer activities.
  • Lead AgeBetter programs (SAIL & Safe at Home) fundraising activities, developing and implementing fundraising and marketing plans, identifying new funding sources, writing grant proposals and creating strategies for donor solicitation.
  • Develop partnerships with organizations that can provide services to members.
  • Ensure effective systems to manage and regularly evaluate program components, so as to measure successes that can be effectively communicated to the board, the funders and other constituents.
  • Serve as the principal public relations representative when interacting with media, funding sources, government agencies and community groups.
  • Deepen and refine all aspects of communications-from web presence to external relations with the goal of creating a stronger brand.
  • Work independently to establish an efficient, organized business compliant with regulations; maintain accurate, confidential records; recruit and effectively manage a small staff; maintain an accurate database of members, member assistance, referral information and service providers, donors and grant providers.
  • Recommend policies and procedures to produce maximum utilization of resources and optimal service levels at minimum cost.
  • Understand and effectively carry out policies as set by the AgeBetter Board of Directors.
  • Track organization income and expenditures, in consultation with the Board of Directors.
  • Attend all Board meetings, implement Board directives.

Essential Qualifications:
  • Skill in overseeing organizational finances, including budget formulation and execution.
  • Experience with laws and regulations that affect services to older people.
  • An understanding of the needs of people age 50 and older as they age in their homes.
  • Ability to communicate persuasively in speech and writing.
  • Ability to develop collaborative relationships with a variety of professionals from City and County officials and service providers, Village Network, etc.

Education/Training/Experience:
  • Minimum BA/BS degree with five (5) to seven (7) years of senior management experience in a non-profit setting preferable with experience in fundraising, communication, business and/or social work. A Master's degree in a relevant field is desirable.
  • Significant work with older adults, social service or home and community based service environments is strongly recommended.
  • Broad knowledge of nonprofit fundraising and marketing techniques, donor and membership development.
  • Experience with budgeting, basic accounting and other financials concerning
  • nonprofits.
  • Proficient in Microsoft 365 including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Teams. Club Express experience or other membership software experience preferred.
