Full Job Description
Under the direction of the lab manager, the incumbent provides advanced technical expertise in the isolation and characterization of extracellular vesicles (EVs) within a service-oriented academic core facility. Independently performs complex and non-standard laboratory procedures, modifying and refining methodologies as needed to support research objectives.

Responsibilities include executing specialized nanoparticle isolation protocols, performing biophysical characterization using advanced instrumentation, maintaining and troubleshooting equipment, and preparing detailed technical reports. The incumbent contributes to quality control processes and maintains comprehensive technical documentation to ensure reproducibility and compliance.
The position also supports core operations by assisting with project documentation, billing records, user communication, coordination with related shared resource facilities, and safety compliance activities. This role exercises independence, technical judgment, and initiative consistent with advanced journey-level laboratory performance.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience preparing technical reports and documentation.
  • Experience in project management, including high degree of organization and ability to generate comprehensive documentation for work practices and policy.
  • Research knowledge of focus area to contribute ideas to procedures to facilitate, standardize, and accomplish research goals of clients.
  • Programming skills to automate data analysis and report generation.
  • Journey-level knowledge of nanoparticle and EV characterization methods.

The Department of Biomedical Engineering (BME) is a large, complex academic department in the College of Engineering and provides instruction and research in multiple areas of biomedical engineering. The BME department is responsible for administering $29M- $32M in annual expenditures (FY25 ~$17M in sponsored projects). BME has approximately 500+ undergraduate students and a graduate group of 120 students and a newly approved self-supporting professional degree (Master of Engineering in Medical Device Development). BME has 70 academic and staff employees including postdoctoral scholars, project scientists and other scholars.

Work Environment

UC Davis is a smoke and tobacco free campus effective January 1, 2014. Work will frequently involve the use of samples from human and animal sources, including blood, plasma, saliva, CSF, urine, and breath condensate. Must be able to tolerant the sight of blood and unpleasant odors. Required to wear protective clothing for extended periods of time including: lab coats, coveralls, gloves, masks, face shields, goggles, and head covers. This personal protective equipment will be provided. Must wear closed toe shoes at all times and pants covering the legs. No eating is permitted in the work area. Due to the nature of equipment usage and scheduling, work in the lab may involve frequent interruptions and occasional work outside of standard work schedule, including evenings and weekends. Employee must be able to adjust to a fluctuating workload, work flexible hours during the work week, and work occasional overtime, including weekends, if necessary. Position may evolve to require working in a secured animal research area with anesthetized rodents and non-human primates. Position may evolve to require working with radioactive isotopes. Required to wear protective clothing for extended periods of time including: gown, coveralls, gloves, masks, face shields, goggles, sleeves, and head covers. Must wear closed toe shoes at all times. No eating is allowed in the work area. Valid CA driver's license.
