Equipment Manager to oversee the planning, utilization, maintenance, repair, and lifecycle management of construction equipment supporting heavy civil highway, bridge, and roadway projects. This position plays a critical role in maximizing equipment availability, controlling operating costs, ensuring regulatory compliance, and supporting project teams with the equipment needed to safely and efficiently deliver complex infrastructure projects. The Equipment Manager works closely with Operations, Project Managers, Superintendents, Fleet personnel, and vendors to optimize equipment performance across multiple project locations.
What You'll Do- Manage the company's heavy construction equipment fleet supporting highway, bridge, roadway, and heavy civil construction projects.
- Coordinate equipment assignments, transfers, and mobilization to ensure projects have the right equipment at the right time.
- Develop and oversee preventive maintenance programs to maximize equipment uptime and reliability.
- Monitor equipment utilization, repair costs, fuel usage, and lifecycle performance to identify opportunities for cost savings and improved efficiency.
- Partner with project leadership to forecast equipment needs for upcoming work and assist with equipment budgeting and planning.
- Oversee outside repair vendors, equipment dealerships, and service providers while negotiating pricing and maintaining strong vendor relationships.
- Ensure compliance with OSHA, DOT, environmental, and company safety standards related to equipment operations and maintenance.
- Maintain accurate fleet records, maintenance histories, inspections, warranties, licensing, and equipment documentation.
- Evaluate equipment replacement strategies and participate in equipment purchasing, disposal, and capital planning decisions.
- Support field operations by troubleshooting equipment issues and coordinating timely repairs to minimize project downtime.
- Lead, develop, and mentor mechanics, shop personnel, and equipment support staff while fostering a culture of safety, accountability, and continuous improvement.
What We're Looking For- Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Engineering, Business, Diesel Technology, or a related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- 8+ years of progressively responsible experience managing heavy construction equipment fleets in the heavy civil construction industry.
- Strong knowledge of heavy equipment used in highway, bridge, roadway, earthwork, concrete paving, and structures construction.
- Experience managing preventive maintenance programs, fleet operations, equipment utilization, and repair management.
- Understanding of equipment ownership and operating costs, lifecycle management, depreciation, and capital planning.
- Experience with equipment management software, fleet management systems, and Microsoft Office applications.
- Strong leadership, organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to effectively manage multiple priorities across several active construction projects.
- Working knowledge of OSHA regulations, DOT requirements, and equipment safety standards.
- Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
