Watertown, MA. We're seeking an early-career Water Resources Engineer or Scientist to support a wide range of stormwater and water quality projects. This position is ideal for someone interested in applying technical, analytical, and field-based skills to real-world water resource challenges.
The selected candidate will work as part of a collaborative team supporting projects related to stormwater regulatory compliance, water resources planning, policy and guidance development, field investigations, GIS-based analysis, and more. This role offers the opportunity to contribute to both office-based technical work and field assignments, while building experience across multiple aspects of water resources projects.
Work is expected to begin in summer or fall 2027 and will be performed in a hybrid work setting.Responsibilities- Providing support for stormwater regulatory compliance programs for state, municipal, and other public-sector clients
- Performing field investigations including, but not limited to, stormwater system inspections, construction site inspections, stormwater system mapping, and water quality sampling
- Using GIS tools, including ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Online, to manage data, develop maps and tools, and perform spatial analyses
- Supporting the collection, organization, analysis, and interpretation of environmental and water quality data
- Developing innovative approaches for internal and client workflows
- Preparing technical reports, graphics, and guidance documents for client deliverables
- Assisting with the preparation of federal, state, and local permit applications and related documentation
- Supporting stormwater program funding approaches, including preparing grant applications and developing stormwater enterprise funds
Skills and Abilities- Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills

- Strong computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and familiarity with AI tools
- Experience with ArcGIS programs is strongly desired
- Familiarity with stormwater, water quality, or environmental regulations
- Familiarity with programming languages such as Python, R, or Arcade, a plus
Qualifications- 0-1 year of experience in civil engineering, environmental engineering, environmental science, or a related field
- Bachelor's degree in Civil or Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science, or a related field
- Master's degree a plus
- Ability and willingness to perform field work and travel to project sites as needed
The full-time annual base salary range for this position, located in Massachusetts, is $86,000 to $88,000. The base salary offered will be determined based on job-related factors, including geographic location, internal equity, experience, credentials, skills, education, work schedule, and other factors permitted by law. The posted salary range reflects base pay only. Additional compensation and benefits available to eligible employees are outlined in our Total Rewards Program.
Annual base salary is one component of VHB's Total Rewards package.
