Job DescriptionPerforms intermediate technical work involving construction inspection, technical investigation, engineering design, CAD drafting, plan and specification preparation, permit review and compliance verification and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the supervision of the Engineering Project Manager.
Duties/Responsibilities - Performs all duties of the Engineering Technician III position. See the Engineering Technician III Job Description for additional responsibilities.
- Verifies and documents existing conditions prior to commencement of construction activities.
- Contacts property owners to notify them of imminent construction activities, to confirm utility service locations, and to coordinate ingress/egress constraints.
- Performs monitoring and confirmation of adequate on-site inspection of developer/privately installed public facilities.
- Performs direct on-site inspections and verifies compliance with approved plans and specifications for developer/privately installed public facilities when the developer has not provided adequate inspection or when the City has agreed to provide inspection services.
- Inspects work performed within public rights-of-way, public easements, and other public property to verify compliance with permit requirements.
- Performs on-site inspection and verification of compliance with grading permit requirements, standards, and stipulations.
- Maintains daily diary of project and inspection related activities; provides detailed notations of all elements of a project constructed in variance with the approved plans.
- Coordinates the activities of the city's material testing consultants with the contractors' operations.
- Assists in investigative and survey activities.
- Assists in design and plan preparation; plots existing condition planimetry, profiles, and cross section; prepares and checks design computations; prepares preliminary layouts and designs for public improvement projects under consideration; prepares quantity takeoffs and preliminary cost estimates; assists the project engineers in developing the contract specifications and final cost estimates for proposed public improvement projects.
- Assists in construction staking activities as needed.
- Records maintenance; transfers as-built information from field plans to permanent office original drawings.
- Assists with annual bridge inspection program within the city.
QualificationsMinimum Qualifications:- Associates/Technical degree with coursework in Civil Engineering, survey-related, or related field and AT LEAST 2 years of practical experience in construction, engineering, survey work, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Level 2 certification by MnDOT in bituminous street, concrete field and grading and base within one year
- Valid driver's license in the State of Minnesota.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Certification by MnDOT in bituminous plant, bridge construction, or signals & lighting
- Certified landscape specialist
- Certification by the University of MN in erosion & sediment control
