POSITION: Engineering Specialist
REPORTS TO: Senior Manager, Engineering and Quality Assurance
DEPARTMENT: Remanufacturing and Repair Centre (RRC)
LOCATION: North Bay
REFERENCE: 390-134-27
SALARY: $91,572 - $107,718

ACCOUNTABILITY STATEMENT:
The Engineering Specialist is responsible for the development and maintenance of engineering data related to refurbishment projects, supporting Customer Scope of Work and general requirements.

MAJOR DUTIES/ RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Researches engineering and manufacturing requirements to develop technical instructions for part removal, reconditioning, assembly, and installation in alignment with customer scope of work.
  • Reviews Management Change Notices (MCNs) for risks to form, fit, function, cost, or schedule; approves, reworks, or rejects as needed.
  • Evaluates exceptions to specifications for materials and parts.
  • Consults with Subject Matter Experts to ensure documentation aligns with best practices.
  • Collaborates with Quality Assurance to develop Inspection and Test Procedures, write instructions, and implement corrective actions.
  • Creates and updates Engineering Change Notices to reflect Scope of Work revisions and Production Station references.
  • Revises Engineering, Production, and QA documentation based on Engineering Change Notices.
  • Updates AutoCAD drawings as required.
  • Provides Bills of Material (BOM) to Procurement for installation, assembly, and sub-assembly designs.
  • Manages multiple projects and priorities effectively.
  • Supports continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Liaises with customer counterparts regarding drawings, technical instructions, and assembly installations.
  • Supports and evaluates warranty requirements.
  • Assists in bid proposal preparation.
  • Delivers BOM lists to Procurement aligned with developed work procedures.
  • Provides direction for dismantling and prototyping while developing initial documentation for project start-ups.
  • Collaborates with Planning and Scheduling to estimate trade hour requirements and recommend task sequencing.
  • Offers technological guidance for company-supported software and programs.
  • Upholds company health and safety policies and leads monthly Engineering department discussions on safety topics.
REQUIREMENTS:
  • Engineering Technician College Diploma
  • Certified Technician, Certified Engineering Technologist and/or Professional Engineer is preferred
  • 3-5 years of relevant engineering experience, including:
    • Manufacturing or remanufacturing industries
    • Mechanical drafting and AutoCAD
    • Writing technical documentation for manufacturing methods and procedures
    • Project management
    • Advanced blueprint reading and work sequencing
    • Knowledge of metal and wood working tools, metallurgy, and industry hardware
  • Certificate of Qualification as Electrician (309A or 442A) and 5 years of relevant railway experience will be considered for those who do not meet the educational requirements
  • Experience with process development and lean manufacturing (asset)
  • Ability to communicate and direct workers in a unionized environment
  • Customer service and technical support experience
  • Mechanical and electrical aptitude with foundational welding knowledge
  • Ability to train employees in drawings, tools, and jigs
  • Familiarity with a railway shop environment and knowledge of railway rolling stock, particularly the remanufacturing of passenger rail coaches is preferred
  • Familiarity with ISO 9001 is considered an asset
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite
  • Proficient in SolidWorks, Adobe, SharePoint, and ERP/EAM systems including AS400
  • Strong problem-solving, troubleshooting, and decision-making skills
  • Self-directed, organized, and able to manage priorities independently
  • Effective communicator with strong interpersonal and written skills
  • Commitment to health and safety
