Salary Range: $95,000.00 to $119,000.00

The Role

Designs, develops, documents, tests and debugs applications software and systems that contain logical and mathematical solutions. Conducts multidisciplinary research and collaborates with equipment designers and/or hardware engineers in the planning, design, development, and utilization of electronic data processing systems for product and commercial software. Determines computer user needs; analyzes system capabilities to resolve problems on program intent, output requirements, input data acquisition, programming techniques and controls; prepares operating instructions; designs and develops compilers and assemblers, utility programs, and operating systems. Ensures software standards are met.

This position provides engineering cognizance and technical support that focuses on developing, maintaining, and integrating software solutions that support production equipment, controls systems, and manufacturing workflows throughout the Plant, manufacturing systems, utility infrastructure, building operating systems, and submarine delivery/transportation systems.

Responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Participate in project reviews, evaluate machine controls requirements, and support specification development.
  • Scope new machines, review design boilerplates, and suggest required features or requirements.
  • Verify specifications align with production needs and integration standards.
  • Support installation, configuration, turnover, and acceptance testing for manufacturing software and automation systems.
  • Maintain software repositories, version control, and configuration baselines for manufacturing applications.
  • Create and maintain databases for findings, corrective actions, machine data, and production analytics.
  • Serve as application administrator for Manufacturing Engineering software tools.
  • Diagnose issues across software, controls, networking, and manufacturing systems.
  • Debugs applications software and systems issues within assigned system(s).
  • Provide technical direction to maintenance personnel and controls technician team to support routine and non-routine equipment repair work
  • Develop a long-range strategic plan for controls improvements for assigned systems and equipment
  • Develop and maintain technical training for junior engineers and controls technicians
  • Work with Manufacturing Engineering, Production, IT, Automation, and vendor partners to support plant operations.
  • Ensure software standards are written and met.


Must Have

Bachelor's Degree and 5 years of relevant exempt experience;
Master's Degree and 3 years of relevant professional experience;
Ph.D. and 0 years of experience.

NNS requires ABET engineer degree from accredited engineer program.

Nice to Have

Knowledge and experience with:
    • PLC programming and logic development (various programming languages)
    • Experience with SCADA, MES, or industrial protaocols.
    • Experience with File transfer protocols for CNC/DNC communications and management systems
    • Experience developing or maintaining industrial software applications
    • Familiarity with Linux, Windows Server, virtual machines, or networking fundamentals
    • Strong troubleshooting skills across software and controls systems
    • Good communication skills for technical exchanges with engineering, production, and vendors
    • Robotics/machine automation
    • Human Machine Interfaces (HMI)
    • Relay interfaces
    • Technical aptitude and understanding of both electrical and mechanical components and how they work together as a system
    • Development and/or interpretation of electrical, mechanical and controls schematics
