Salary Range: $124,000.00 to $153,000.00

The Role

Researches, plans, designs and develops mechanical products and systems such as instruments, controls, robots, engines, machines and mechanical, thermal hydraulic or heat transfer systems for production, transmission, measurement, and use of energy. Applies research to the planning, design, development, and testing of mechanical and/or electromechanical systems, instruments, controls, engines, and/or machines.

The Advanced Propulsion team is looking for an up-and-coming team leader to support the development of the next generation fast attack submarine, SSN(X). This is an opportunity to get in at the beginning of a new design and have influence over what will become the Navy's premier attack submarine platform.

The candidate will provide technical support to the engineering team and act as component lead supporting the development of the main propulsion unit. The candidate will have a hand in the entire component development process including concept design, specification and requirements development, evaluating and selecting suppliers, component production, test and validation, and all technical problem resolutions. The candidate will have a strong understanding of the integration of mechanical components into systems. The candidate will work closely with the engineering manager in a project lead role to develop strategies, goals, milestones, schedules, risk management plans, cost estimations, and methodologies to implement task execution.

Must Have

Bachelor's Degree and 9 years of relevant exempt experience;
Master's Degree and 7 years of relevant professional experience;
Ph.D. and 4 years of experience.

Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.

Nice to Have

The preferred qualifications for this position include:
  • Technical understanding of turbine-powered main reduction gears (or sub-components), gear design and manufacture, and knowledge of auxiliary support systems encompassing design, manufacture, and test.
  • Proficient in technical writing. Candidate will be responsible for the development and review of the team's written deliverables, and will provide feedback to other suppliers' deliverables.
  • Very strong communication skills, both written and verbal. Candidate will provide occasional briefs to company leadership as well as external stakeholders.
  • Systems engineering or engineering project management background: The ideal candidate will be able to facilitate a logical and systematic conversion of technical requirements into total systems solutions that acknowledge technical, schedule, and cost constraints.
