Description of Work

The Work Zone Traffic Control Unit provides technical expertise, guidance, design, and quality assurance to manage traffic through and around NCDOT construction projects, in accordance with guidelines which require federally funded highway construction projects to have an approved traffic control plan to provide safety for highway construction workers.

We are seeking a highly motivated Engineer II to review and develop Transportation Management Plans (TMPs) for diverse projects and complete special assignments.

The main responsibilities of this position include:
• Developing in-house TMPs,
• Assisting with scoping, negotiating, scheduling and providing oversight of outsourced TMP design performed by Private Engineering Firms (PEFs),
• Reviewing internal and external TMP submittals,
• Coordinating with various NCDOT Design Units (such as roadway, hydraulics, structures, traffic operations, etc), NCDOT Divisions, PEFs, other public agencies, and project stakeholders to ensure constructability of the design, safety and mobility of all users, and contractor productivity,
• Developing construction sequencing, determining the appropriate Traffic Management strategies, and completing Road User Costs Analysis to ensure a safe and efficient work zone for all users and construction personnel,
• Submitting completed TMPs in support of NCDOT's Project Delivery initiative,
• Assisting field engineers to mitigate unanticipated impacts during construction by answering technical questions in a timely manner to help ensure project completion schedules are maintained, and
• Performing work zone safety field reviews of active construction projects to verify compliance with NCDOT specifications and the approved TMP.

Certain tasks may require occasional overnight travel, such as attending field inspections or meetings at Division offices and performing work zone safety reviews throughout the state.

Applicants registered as an Engineer Intern (EI) are encouraged to apply. Registration as an Engineer Intern (EI) in North Carolina is preferred.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

Salary Grade and Salary Range: NC18 $63,927 - $111,871

Management prefers applicants with the following:
  • Experience in Transportation Management Plan/Temporary Traffic Control Design
  • Knowledge of NCDOT's Roadway Standard Drawings, Standard Specifications, and the MUTCD
  • Experience with reading and comprehending Roadway, Drainage, and/or Structural Plans used for Highway Construction Projects
  • Experience in Microsoft Office programs such as Word and Excel
  • Experience in MicroStation or comparable CADD software


Minimum Education and Experience
