This position is part of the Substation Engineering team located in the Duke Energy Progress (DEP) headquarters in downtown Raleigh, NC. This work group is responsible for design of new and existing substations and related equipment within the Carolinas East Service territory of Duke Energy. Primary area of responsibility includes substation physical design in support of substation projects.

Design projects range from routine equipment modifications and installations to the complete design of new transmission facilities. Coordinates work to manage multiple projects simultaneously to ensure timely release of engineering designs. Utilizes a variety of tools and techniques in order to complete an engineering design, including current design specifications, pertinent code manuals, computer aided design/drafting software, and other reference sources. The final product is an engineering release package consisting of pertinent drawings and bills of material.

The person in this position will work as part of a project team in the area of substation physical (electrical, mechanical and structural).

The person in this position will work as part of a project team to develop detailed project scopes, layouts of substations, detailed designs of substations, plan and section drawings and other plans required for construction of specific substation projects. The work performed by this unit requires an understanding of power systems, transformers, circuit breakers and other major equipment as well as other civil, mechanical, and electrical engineering principles. The person will be involved in the development and review of designs for high voltage substations at voltages of 13kV, 23kV, 115kV, 230kV and 500kV. The person in this position must be able to manage multiple projects in various stages of design so as to meet project schedule deadlines; provide design support to field personnel during project implementation; develop and maintain sufficient level of expertise in use of CAD software for efficient production of engineering work; and collaborate in a team environment to spread knowledge and to produce the best quality product possible.

The position is responsible for: 1) producing the best possible design for transmission substation facilities considering all environmental, land use, engineering and economic factors and in accordance with the approved schedule; 2) planning, coordinating, and monitoring the progress and quality of work group activities on assigned projects to meet the requirements of the Project Managers; 3) specific project information for various planning studies, the annual budget, and special projects; 4) performing work assignments in a manner consistent with both the Duke Energy Safety Manual as well as with Federal, State, and local laws; 5) completing all project activities and work activities in a sound and cost-effective manner that contributes to the safety of Company employees and the public, reliability of service, and reasonable protection of the environment.

Duties and Responsibilities:

With very Minimal Supervision
  • Provides engineering/technical expertise in the area of transmission substation design. Analyzes scenarios, evaluates options, and performs design calculations to comply with design standards, applicable codes and sound engineering practices. Responsibilities include support of transmission substation routing/siting, creating conceptual designs and cost estimates, preforming detailed design including electrical arrangements, one-lines, structure, foundation, and electrical design for substation projects. Responsibilities also include providing construction support, oversight and other similar activities.
  • Provides engineering/technical expertise and guidance in the identification, analysis and resolution of complex problems in area of substation design.
  • Prepares thorough and accurate job packages, technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations and drawings. Conducts analysis and recommends process enhancements and design standards relative to area of assignment.
  • Conducts engineering and related studies; completes non-routine engineering projects with minimal oversight with the ability to independently manage project schedules and interfaces; competent to design, operate and maintain systems with moderate impact on existing systems.
  • Ensures accomplishment of substation projects and overall business goals through effective planning, organizing, estimating, execution and monitoring of work activities. Effectively handles differing situations which require developing creative solutions with area of expertise. Modifies designs to address construction issues, environmental circumstances and public concerns. Assists construction in troubleshooting and problem resolution and provides on-site support.
  • Makes informed decisions that may impact major projects or business/department results.
  • Possesses and applies the fundamental engineering concepts, practices and procedures; proficient in technical and analytical competencies necessary to handle assignments of increasing complexity.
  • Develops positive working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities.
  • Demonstrates effective oral and written communication skills. Maintains accurate records and files.
  • Supports the company's goals and represents the company positively and professionally.


Basic Requirements Engineer II
  • Graduation from a four-year college or university with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program. A master's degree in engineering can be considered in lieu of the Bachelor of Science in Engineering degree.
  • Minimum 2 years of relevant engineering experience.


Basic Requirements Engineer III
  • Graduation from a four-year college or university with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program. A master's degree in engineering can be considered in lieu of the Bachelor of Science in Engineering degree.
  • Minimum 4 years of relevant engineering experience.


Desired Qualifications
  • Experience in the electric utility industry.
  • Electrical, Mechanical, or Civil Engineering Degree.
  • Professional Engineering Designation in NC or SC.
  • Proficient in transmission substation design theories and principles particularly with focus on electro-mechanical concepts as well as substation structural design.
  • Proficient with substation design software and CAD tools; e.g. AutoCAD, Microstation, MathCAD, SAG10, WinIGS, CDEGs, RISA, Lpile, etc.
  • Experience in asset management tools (e.g. Maximo)
  • Proficient in engineering theories and applying engineering principles to solve problems.
  • Familiarity with applicable design codes and standards including IEEE 605, IEEE 80, NESC, NEC, and ASCE 113.
  • Proficient in practices of researching solutions, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations and preparing and presenting those recommendations.
  • Ability to collaborate with a variety of individuals from various socio-economic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Proficient in principles of project management.


Working Conditions and Travel
  • Hybrid Mobility Classification - Work will be performed from both remote and onsite locations after the onboarding period. However, hybrid employees should live within a reasonable daily commute to a Duke Energy facility.
  • Normal Job functions are performed Monday through Friday schedule with some system travel required (5 - 20%).
  • Must be available for call-out and work during system emergencies.
  • Alternate work schedules, including ½ day Friday and alternate Friday off are available based on business unit management discretion.
