Job Description

The manufacturing UX (User Experience) role will be integral in supporting the execution of the production system, as well as transitioning new products to the production environment. This role will initially require a heavy focus on tactics to understand the current condition of operations and drive toward improved design of the production environment, work instructions and learning materials. Over time it will evolve into a leadership/coaching position focused on the development of people and process.

The Operations Strategic Capabilities Unit plays a fundamental role in enabling efficient business and program execution - from strategic capital investments, industrial operations and an efficient supply chain, to state-of-the-art manufacturing and test operations and top-notch facilities management.

What You'll Do:
  • Focus on the ergonomics of designing equipment, machines, devices, facilities/work environments to optimize human well-being and overall operational performance.
  • Develop ergonomic design concepts with user interface design considerations; conduct user need analysis, task flow analysis, interface analysis/design, process usability evaluations, and problem resolution; and conduct human factors applied research in the development of new process and work instruction design.
  • Prepare and support end user work instruction design and execution.
  • Analyze process to identify root causes of observed use errors.
  • Contribute to workflow and user interface designs.
  • Understand and contribute to the documentation and improved design of manufacturing work instructions, technical guides and learning materials.
  • Formulate, establish, and annotate the navigation, functionality, organizational structure and page-to-page flows of the user experience for our system tools and applications.
  • Stay abreast of advances in user interface (both technical and experiential) and look for ways to appropriately integrate these advances into products.
  • Express user experience best practices across the team, and mentor colleagues and staff on best-in-class usability concepts.
  • Develop and communicate interaction models, sitemaps, wireframes, prototypes, screen flows and storyboards.
  • Create aesthetic and seamless navigation/workflows that reflect the team member's view of the work being done.
  • Collaborate closely with designers and developers to build both functional and aesthetic processes and tools that are in line with our true north and mission.
  • Be a key driver in change efforts that require a human factors lens.
  • Immediate Focus:
    • Work with technicians, planners, operations specialists and manufacturing engineers to assess, plan for and improve production execution work instructions, systems usage and local work environment.
  • Mid-to-long-term Focus:
    • Design and develop the approach to incorporate human centered design principles and tools into future production planning processes and sustaining execution.
  • Maintain a regular and predictable work schedule.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships within the department, the Strategic Business Units, Strategic Capabilities Units and the Company. Interact appropriately with others in order to maintain a positive and productive work environment.
  • Perform other duties as necessary.

On-Site Work Environment: This position requires regular in-person engagement by working on-site five days each normally scheduled week in the primary work location. Travel and local commute between company campuses and other possible non-company locations may be required.

Working Conditions:
  • Work is performed in an office, laboratory, production floor, or cleanroom, outdoors or remote research environment.
  • May occasionally work in production work centers where use of protective equipment and gear is required.
  • May access other facilities in various weather conditions.

Required Skills and Education

  • BS degree or higher in Engineering or a related technical field is required plus 4 or more years related experience.
  • Each higher-level degree, i.e., Master's Degree or Ph.D., may substitute for two years of experience. Related technical experience may be considered in lieu of education. Degree must be from a university, college, or school which is accredited by an agency recognized by the US Secretary of Education, US Department of Education.
  • 4 years of demonstrated work experience in Human Factors, Industrial Engineering, Cognitive Science, Human Systems Integration, or a related field.
  • Excellent communication skills, along with the ability to influence and inspire teams.
  • Comprehensive and advanced knowledge of human factors principles, tools, techniques, standards, and capabilities.
  • Experience applying human factors principles to project/change efforts and ability to assess results.
  • A commitment to advancing human-centered design principles and practices in all aspects of the production lifecycle.
  • Solid understanding of usability standards.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in visual, written and interactive form: design documents, flow charts, prototypes, etc.
