BAE Systems Space & Mission Systems (SMS) is seeking an EO/IR Test Engineer to support the integration, verification, validation, and characterization of advanced Electro-Optical/Infrared (EO/IR) systems and payloads. This role provides an opportunity to work alongside experienced systems, optical, software, and hardware engineers supporting the development and testing of cutting-edge sensing technologies.

The EO/IR Test Engineer will assist in planning and executing test activities, analyzing system performance, troubleshooting anomalies, and supporting verification of customer requirements throughout the system lifecycle.

The ideal candidate has a technical foundation in optics, imaging systems, physics, or engineering and is interested in developing expertise in EO/IR system integration and testing.

What You'll Do:

  • Support integration and test activities for EO/IR sensors, payloads, and imaging systems.
  • Assist in execution of laboratory, environmental, field, and system-level test campaigns.
  • Support development of test plans, procedures, and test reports.
  • Collect, process, and analyze test data to evaluate system performance.
  • Assist with optical alignment, calibration, and characterization activities.
  • Support image quality assessments and performance evaluations.
  • Participate in hardware and software integration activities.
  • Identify, document, and troubleshoot test anomalies.
  • Support requirements verification and validation activities.
  • Assist with development of automated test scripts and data analysis tools.
  • Document test results and contribute to technical reports and review materials.
  • Collaborate with systems, software, optical, and hardware engineering teams.
  • Support development and maintenance of verification artifacts within digital engineering and MBSE environments.
  • Participate in technical reviews, integration events, and customer demonstrations.
  • Maintain a regular and predictable work schedule.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships within the department, the Strategic Business Units, Strategic Capabilities Units and the Company. Interact appropriately with others in order to maintain a positive and productive work environment.
  • Perform other duties as necessary.

On-Site Work Environment: This position requires regular in-person engagement by working on-site five days each normally scheduled week in the primary work location. Travel and local commute between company campuses and other possible non-company locations may be required.

Working Conditions:
  • Work is performed in an office, laboratory, production floor, or cleanroom, outdoors or remote research environment.
  • May occasionally work in production work centers where use of protective equipment and gear is required.
  • May access other facilities in various weather conditions.


Required Skills and Education

  • BS degree or higher in Engineering or a related technical field is required plus 2 or more years related experience.
  • Each higher-level degree, i.e., Master's Degree or Ph.D., may substitute for two years of experience. Related technical experience may be considered in lieu of education. Degree must be from a university, college, or school which is accredited by an agency recognized by the US Secretary of Education, US Department of Education.
  • 2+ years of experience in test engineering, integration, verification, validation, or related technical roles.
  • Experience supporting integration and test activities on complex EO/IR, imaging, sensing, aerospace, or defense systems.
  • Experience developing and executing test procedures and test campaigns.
  • Familiarity with requirements verification and validation processes.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and resolve technical issues in laboratory and integration environments.
  • Experience collecting, analyzing, and interpreting technical performance data.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work in a team-oriented environment.

A security clearance or access with Polygraph is not required to be eligible for this position. However, the applicant must be willing and eligible for submission, depending on program requirements, after an offer is accepted and must be able to maintain the applicable clearance/access.

Preferred Skills and Education

  • Academic or professional experience in optics, photonics, imaging systems, infrared systems, or electro-optical technologies.
  • Experience with optical laboratories, imaging sensors, cameras, or infrared systems.
  • Familiarity with optical alignment and calibration concepts.
  • Experience with data analysis tools such as MATLAB, Python, or similar software.
  • Familiarity with requirements verification and validation processes.
  • Exposure to MBSE concepts and tools such as Cameo Systems Modeler.
  • Experience supporting environmental or qualification testing.
  • Familiarity with systems engineering principles and digital engineering practices.
  • Coursework or project experience involving image processing, optical systems, remote sensing, or sensor performance analysis.
