Energy Solutions Business Development Manager
Alabama Power Company - Energy Solutions
This position is flexible to be based out of Birmingham, Montgomery, or Mobile, AL

ENERGY SERVICES OVERVIEW:

Energy Services partners with customers across Alabama to identify, develop, and provide turnkey energy conservation and electrical infrastructure solutions that improve facility performance, reduce operating costs, and support long-term customer and business growth. The organization brings together Business Development, Project Development, and Project Delivery & Construction capabilities to move qualified customer opportunities from initial engagement through executed contracts and successful project delivery.

POSITION SUMMARY

This position leads Energy Services' business development strategy for energy conservation and ESCO-market opportunities across Alabama. Responsibilities include setting strategy and priorities, managing pipeline growth, advancing qualified opportunities into contracted work, and coordinating with Sales/Account Management, Project Development, and Project Delivery & Construction to deliver customer and business value.

Travel Expectations - The successful candidate will be expected to travel statewide to customer, prospect, project, and stakeholder locations to support strategic customer engagement, market development, coaching, and leadership oversight. Expected travel is approximately 30-40%.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS

Education:
  • Bachelor's Degree in engineering, technical, business, finance, marketing, or related field preferred.
    • Certified Energy Manager (CEM) Certification - REQUIRED
    • Project Management Certification - preferred
    • Professional Engineering License (AL) - preferred


Knowledge/Experience:
  • Minimum two years of people leadership experience required.
  • Experience leading business development, sales, account strategy, or customer-facing teams preferred.
  • Experience setting strategy, managing pipeline performance, establishing priorities, and advancing multiple customer opportunities.
  • Experience developing customer-facing energy conservation, energy efficiency, or ESCO-related opportunities, including proposals, scopes of work, pricing strategies, customer presentations, and leadership-level reporting.
  • Knowledge of the ESCO market, energy conservation measures, performance contracting concepts, market positioning, customer value drivers, and measurement and verification concepts.
  • Knowledge of commercial, industrial, institutional, and public-sector facility systems, including HVAC, controls, lighting, water conservation, building envelope, boilers, chillers, motors, and related infrastructure.
  • Working knowledge of proposal development, project development inputs, budgeting, estimating, scheduling, contract development, approval governance, and customer decision processes; experience working with cross-functional resources and commercial, industrial, institutional, healthcare, education, or governmental customers preferred.

  • Strong analytical, financial, organizational, prioritization, and decision-making skills required
  • Ability to remove obstacles, escalate issues, coordinate support, and maintain business development momentum required


POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Set statewide business development strategy, priorities, and operating cadence for Energy Services energy conservation opportunities within the MUSH and commercial/industrial markets.
  • Lead, coach, and provide work direction to directs for customer discovery, opportunity qualification, proposal strategy, and opportunity advancement within the energy conservation market.
  • Establish pipeline governance, opportunity review cadence, customer engagement expectations, proposal standards, and performance reporting for leadership visibility.
  • Own the timeliness, accuracy, and consistency of business development updates and pipeline reporting across Energy Services and key organizational stakeholders.
  • Prioritize opportunities based on customer value, feasibility, risk, available resources, and strategic alignment.
  • Coordinate with APC Account Management/Sales leadership, internal partners, external stakeholders, and cross-functional teams to support customer engagement, proposal advancement, governance, resource alignment, and market growth.
  • Ensure proposals and contracts are adequately developed through coordination with the Project Development Team, including confirmation that scope, estimates, schedules, risks, financial assumptions, customer commitments, and execution transition plans are complete, aligned, and ready for customer and internal approval.
  • Represent Energy Services in customer, industry, and internal leadership discussions related to energy conservation strategy, ESCO-market growth, and statewide business development priorities.
