Section Head of Emergency and Critical Care. This leadership position provides an exciting opportunity to help shape and grow a developing academic veterinary medical center while maintaining an active role in clinical service, teaching, and mentorship.
Position SummaryThe Emergency and Critical Care Section Head will provide leadership for the ECC service, fostering a culture of clinical excellence, teamwork, patient safety, and continuous improvement. The successful candidate will work closely with departmental and hospital leadership to advance clinical operations, support faculty and staff development, and ensure exceptional patient care and client service.
This position is ideal for a candidate who enjoys building programs, mentoring colleagues, and developing innovative approaches to delivering emergency and critical care within a collaborative, multidisciplinary environment.
Primary Responsibilities:Clinical Leadership- Provide strategic and operational leadership for the Emergency and Critical Care service.
- Promote high-quality, evidence-based patient care and a culture of safety.
- Collaborate with hospital leadership to optimize service delivery, workflow, and resource utilization.
- Support quality improvement initiatives and participate in the development of standard operating procedures and clinical guidelines.
- Foster strong working relationships with specialty and primary care services.
Faculty and Team Development- Recruit, mentor, and support ECC faculty and clinical team members.
- Promote a positive, inclusive, and collaborative workplace culture.
- Assist with onboarding, performance development, and professional growth of faculty and staff.
- Encourage engagement, accountability, and shared ownership of service goals.
Teaching and Mentorship- Participate in clinical instruction of veterinary students, interns, and residents.
- Support the development of future veterinary professionals through mentorship and coaching.
- Contribute to educational initiatives and curriculum development as appropriate.
Program Growth and Innovation- Identify opportunities to expand and enhance ECC services.
- Collaborate with leadership on strategic planning and program development.
- Utilize data and performance metrics to guide decision-making and improve outcomes.
- Advance initiatives that improve patient care, client experience, and operational efficiency.
Scholarship and Professional Engagement- Engage in scholarly activities consistent with academic appointment expectations.
- Participate in professional organizations and contribute to the advancement of emergency and critical care medicine.
Qualifications:Required- DVM or equivalent veterinary degree.
- Board certification by the American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care (DACVECC) or equivalent specialty certification.
- Eligibility for veterinary licensure in the state of New Jersey.
- Demonstrated commitment to excellence in clinical service, teaching, and teamwork.
- Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
Preferred- Prior leadership, supervisory, or administrative experience.
- Experience in an academic veterinary medical center or specialty referral hospital.
- Track record of mentoring faculty, house officers, or clinical staff.
- Interest in program development and service growth.
Salary Range:In compliance with the State of New Jersey's Pay Transparency Act, the annual base salary range for this position is
$150,000 to $200,000. Salary will be commensurate with experience, qualifications, scope of responsibilities, internal equity, and market considerations.
