Job Description

Embedded Software Engineering Intern - Sunnyvale, CA

Role Description:

We are seeking an Embedded Software Engineering Intern to join our Hardware Systems Engineering team, sitting at the intersection of hardware, manufacturing, and software. We characterize and qualify camera and LiDAR components, evaluate suppliers, and build the test and analysis infrastructure that turns raw sensor data into confidence that a product will perform in the field. It's a small, hands-on team where you'll see your work go from idea to test bench to real hardware decisions.

CoStar Group's technology internship program provides hands-on experience with enterprise-level projects. Interns work alongside full-time engineers, contributing to meaningful business initiatives and gaining exposure to core software engineering principles. Each intern is paired with a dedicated mentor to support technical development, career growth, and day-to-day learning throughout the program.

This position is located in Sunnyvale, CA.

What You'll Do:

  • Work with real sensor data (imaging, depth/LiDAR, or test-bench measurements) to build models, tools, or analysis pipelines that help the team make faster, better-informed engineering decisions
  • Help develop or improve methods for analyzing optical, calibration, or reliability test data
  • Prototype approaches to problems like anomaly detection, signal/data processing, calibration modeling, or automated data quality checks
  • Collaborate with hardware, test, and software engineers to understand the problem before jumping to a solution
  • Document your approach and present findings to the team


Basic Qualifications:
  • Currently pursuing a bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited, not-for-profit, in-person university or college in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Data Science, Statistics, Robotics, or a comparable major. Must be planning to return to school following the completion of the Summer 2027 internship.
  • Must have an expected graduation date of December 2027 - June 2028
  • Minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA
  • Available to participate in the full 10-week summer internship program and commit to a 40-hour work week throughout the internship.
  • Proficiency in at least one programming language commonly used for ML/data work (e.g., Python, C++, and/or MATLAB)
  • Coursework, project, internship, or work experience applying machine learning, statistics, applied data analysis, or similar concepts
  • Comfortable working with real-world, imperfect data


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Exposure to any of the following (no specific combination required): PyTorch, TensorFlow, OpenCV, signal processing, computer vision, sensor fusion, or robotics
  • Experience with hardware, embedded systems, or physical test data (academic, personal projects, or professional)
  • Personal, academic, or capstone projects applying ML to a real dataset or physical system
  • Comfort moving between exploratory analysis and more rigorous engineering documentation
  • Curiosity about how hardware and ML intersect Ability to write understandable, maintainable, and well-documented code.
  • Interest in learning new technologies and building high-quality software.
  • Demonstrated initiative through academic, internship, project, or extracurricular experiences.
  • Experience collaborating on academic, internship, project, or team-based work.
  • Familiarity with Agile development practices and the Software Development Lifecycle
  • Understanding of web services, APIs, or application design concepts, such as REST or GraphQL.
  • Exposure to AI, machine learning, data science, or emerging technology concepts through coursework, projects, internships, or personal learning.
  • Experience building or contributing to technical projects, such as capstone projects, personal applications, research, open-source contributions, or class-based software projects.

The final salary or hourly rate offered for this role will fall within the range set forth below based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, geographic location, skills, and competencies.

Base Compensation: $40 - $45 (Hourly)
