Full Job Description
Job Summary: The Embedded Engineering Lead is an 80% individual contributor / 20% people and project management role responsible for driving the full lifecycle of next-generation IoT hardware and firmware for utility metering and industrial IoT applications. As the technical thought leader, this role owns end-to-end IoT system architecture-from edge device to cloud-including protocol selection, security posture, serialization strategy, and cloud platform integration, while providing technical leadership to a team of 3-4 embedded engineers. Experience in the utility metering space (smart meters, AMI, water/gas/electric monitoring) is highly valued.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead circuit design (analog, digital, and RF) and PCB layout for robust, low-power IoT devices tailored to utility metering environments.
  • Architect and implement production-grade embedded firmware in C/C++ across bare-metal, cooperative scheduler, and RTOS environments; develop and maintain firmware-over-the-air (FOTA) update mechanisms, ensuring reliability and security in field-deployed devices.
  • Design and integrate low-power wireless communication stacks: Bluetooth/BLE, sub-GHz, and cellular (LTE-M/NB-IoT); implement and optimize microcontroller peripherals and interfaces (SPI, I²C, UART, ADC, GPIO, etc.).
  • Drive electromechanical integration, design-for-manufacturing (DFM), and design-for-test (DFT) considerations to ensure high-volume production readiness.
  • Define and evolve modern IoT system architecture, including device-to-cloud data flows, protocol selection (MQTT, CoAP, etc.), efficient serialization (Protobuf, CBOR, JSON), and cloud integration at the protocol, security (TLS, device authentication, key management), and serialization layers.
  • Directly manage, mentor, and grow a team of 3-4 embedded, firmware, and hardware engineers; own project planning, risk management, sprint execution, and cross-functional coordination to deliver on time and within budget.
  • Serve as the go-to technical authority and thought leader; guide architecture decisions, trade-off analyses, and innovation roadmaps in collaboration with product, cloud, and manufacturing teams.
  • Contributes to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical or Electronics Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field; advanced degree preferred.
  • 8+ years of experience in embedded systems and IoT device development, including a track record of shipping high-volume, field-deployed IoT products. Previous experience leading or mentoring technical teams and managing technical projects end-to-end.
  • Deep expertise in circuit design (analog, digital, RF) and PCB layout; proficiency with Altium or equivalent EDA tools.
  • Strong C/C++ firmware development skills across bare-metal, cooperative scheduler, and RTOS (FreeRTOS, Zephyr) environments; hands-on FOTA implementation experience.
  • Proven experience with Bluetooth/BLE, sub-GHz radios, cellular IoT modems (LTE-M/NB-IoT), and standard microcontroller interfaces (SPI, I²C, UART, ADC, GPIO).
  • Solid IoT system architecture knowledge, including modern IoT protocols (MQTT, CoAP), data serialization formats (Protobuf, CBOR, JSON), and cloud integration at the protocol, security, and serialization layers.
  • Familiarity with electromechanical design and DFM/DFT best practices; experience with industrial certifications (FCC, UL, IEC, IP68+) and harsh-environment design is a plus.
  • Demonstrated leadership ability: skilled at mentoring engineers, driving technical decisions, managing project timelines, and collaborating cross-functionally with product, cloud, and manufacturing teams.

Additional Information
  • Location: Louisville, CO
  • Employment Type: Full-time, 40+ hours a week
  • Shift: Typical daytime hours; may vary based on project needs

Salary and Benefits
  • Base Salary or Range: $150,000.00 to $170,000.00 USD
  • Summary of Benefits: Competitive package including Medical, Dental, and Vision plans; 401(k) with company match; and Paid Time Off (PTO)
