About the job Electrochemical Engineer

Position Overview

As a senior electrochemical engineer at BlueShift, you will lead the development and scaling of electrochemical technology for carbon capture and critical mineral extraction applications. Your expertise will drive the development of cost-effective, scalable solutions that advance BlueShift's mission to accelerate economic resilience by unlocking underutilized resources.

Responsibilities
  • Lead the design, build, testing, validation, and optimization of flow electrochemical setups
  • Characterize the cell performance using the appropriate combination of electrochemical and measurements and surface characterization approaches
  • Model the electrochemical cell using a combination of first principles and hybrid modeling approaches
  • Develop scaling rules and stack configurations for pilot and commercial scale units based on experimental data, modeling results, and technoeconomic assessments
  • Collaborate externally with vendors, contractors, and design firms
  • Mentor and train junior engineers; prepare technical documentation for internal and external stakeholders; collaborate internally with the team for continuous process improvement
  • Stay at the forefront of emerging technologies and best practices in electrochemistry, carbon capture, and mineral extraction for idea generation and continuous improvement


Qualifications
  • Advanced degree in chemical engineering, chemistry, mechanical engineering, electrochemical engineering, or a related field
  • 3+ years of experience in developing and scaling (a big plus) flow electrochemical technologies
  • Strong fundamental understanding of reaction engineering, thermodynamics, and transport phenomena
  • Experience in flow cell design, assembly, and operation (zero gap and non-zero gap) as well as integration with the balance of plant
  • Experience with electrochemical characterization techniques (e.g., CV, EIS, Polarization curves) and physicochemical characterization techniques (e.g., ICP, XRF)
  • Experience with accelerated stress testing and durability enhancement of the electrode
  • Experience working with external design, contracting, and engineering firms
  • Strong sense of ownership and problem-solving skills, the ability to learn new concepts quickly and make data-driven decisions, and an innovative and entrepreneurial spirit
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a track record of collaboration across disciplines
  • Ability to travel to pilot sites and partner facilities as needed
