Position Overview

The Electrical Lead Field Engineer is responsible for overseeing all electrical engineering activities at the job site, ensuring safe, compliant, and efficient execution of electrical installation, testing, commissioning, and maintenance work. This role serves as the subject-matter expert for electrical systems in the field, providing technical direction to field engineers, subcontractors, and construction teams. The Electrical Lead Field Engineer acts as the primary liaison between site operations, engineering design teams, and project management to ensure project goals, schedules, and quality standards are met.

Responsibilities

  • Provide on-site technical expertise for electrical systems, including power distribution, grounding, lighting, control systems, and associated equipment.
  • Interpret engineering drawings, schematics, and specifications to support installation and commissioning activities.
  • Troubleshoot technical issues and provide resolutions in real time to minimize schedule disruptions.
  • Lead field engineering team members, offering guidance, mentoring, and technical support.
  • Coordinate electrical installation activities with construction, mechanical, civil, and instrumentation teams to ensure seamless project execution.
  • Review design documents for constructability and identify potential conflicts or improvements.
  • Support procurement efforts by reviewing vendor documentation, equipment data sheets, and technical submittals.
  • Help maintain project schedules by planning work, monitoring progress, and mitigating potential delays.
  • Perform site inspections to verify compliance with engineering standards, project specifications, and electrical codes (e.g., NEC, IEEE, NFPA).
  • Oversee testing and commissioning of electrical equipment, including switchgear, transformers, motors, protection systems, and control panels.
  • Prepare and review test procedures, work packages, method statements, and turnover documentation.
  • Ensure all work meets safety, quality, and regulatory requirements.
  • Promote and enforce company and site safety policies.
  • Conduct safety reviews for electrical tasks such as lockout/tagout (LOTO), energized work permits, and arc-flash protection boundaries.
  • Identify potential safety hazards and implement corrective measures.
  • Maintain accurate field records, including redlines, daily reports, test results, and equipment status logs.
  • Provide regular project updates to site leadership and project management.
  • Support preparation of turnover packages and final documentation for commissioning and client acceptance.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
  • Typically 5-10+ years of experience in electrical field engineering, construction, commissioning, or related roles.
  • Proven experience leading field engineering teams on large-scale industrial, utility, commercial, or infrastructure projects
  • Strong understanding of electrical power systems, protection schemes, and industrial control systems.
  • Ability to read and interpret one-line diagrams, wiring diagrams, P&IDs, and engineering specifications.
  • Experience with testing equipment such as multimeters, insulation resistance testers, relay test sets, and grounding testers.
  • Familiarity with applicable codes and standards: NEC, IEEE, NFPA 70E, OSHA requirements.
  • Strong communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively across multidisciplinary teams.
  • Excellent problem-solving and decision-making abilities.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work on active construction sites.
  • Willingness to travel and work extended hours depending on project needs.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to meet site access requirements.
