Full Job Description
The SARA High Power Electromagnetics Division (HPEM) is looking for a remarkably talented, motivated, and imaginative Electrical Engineer specializing in Diagnostic Instrumentation to support research and development activities and transition innovative technologies to the DoD, DoE, and their contractors in Colorado Springs, CO. The candidate will have the opportunity to grow and learn with talented engineers, physicists, and technicians on long-standing programs and new programs supporting our customers. Our small group will allow the candidate to experience, contribute, and collaborate in a multidisciplinary nature from conception all the way through to operation.

The Electrical Engineer will execute advanced electrical measurements across diverse test environments, conducting diagnostics from slow, distributed to ultra-fast, localized scenarios. The role involves designing and implementing test beds in laboratory settings, supporting electrical measurement across complex technical domains, and executing precision diagnostic techniques. The position will also include development and integration of instrumentation and data acquisition systems, including sensor interfaces and signal conditioning approaches in challenging environments. We seek a skilled engineer capable of navigating intricate measurement challenges, contributing to technological innovation and mentoring junior engineers, with a focus on comprehensive electrical measurement, data interpretation, and technical problem-solving.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Serve as a technical authority in electrical diagnostics, measurement, and instrumentation across laboratory and field environments
  • Design and implement advanced measurement systems, including instrumentation, data acquisition, and sensor interfaces
  • Lead development and execution of diagnostic approaches for complex electrical phenomena, including fast transient conditions
  • Oversee system testing, calibration, troubleshooting, and validation in challenging environments
  • Analyze and interpret measurement data to support program objectives and technical decision-making
  • Collaborate across multidisciplinary teams and mentor junior engineers in diagnostic and measurement best practices

Technical Expertise:

  • Expertise in time- and frequency-domain measurements, including fast transients
  • Strong grounding in electromagnetic physics for high-power systems
  • Mastery of diagnostic instrumentation and measurement techniques
  • Proficient in differential/single-ended measurements, noise characterization, and grounding strategies
  • Experience with EMC/EMI measurement and mitigation in complex environments
  • Skilled in signal analysis (Fourier methods, transient response, system behavior)
  • Focus on high-precision measurement with deep physical insight

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or Physics
  • 8 - 10 years of relevant professional experience (or additional education/degree in lieu of experience)
  • Demonstrated expertise in diagnostic testing and measurement systems
  • Advanced proficiency with diagnostic equipment (oscilloscopes, signal generators, network analyzers)
  • Strong data analysis skills using Excel, MATLAB, and Mathcad
  • Proven track record of complex field and laboratory testing
  • Available for up to 25% travel for on-site testing
  • Experience working in varied test environments
  • Self-motivated with demonstrated ability to work independently
  • Strong problem-solving skills with resilience in challenging situations
  • Excellent documentation and technical communication abilities
  • Proven ability to manage multiple priorities in dynamic environments
  • Track record of continuous learning and skill development
  • US Citizen with the ability to obtain and maintain DoD Top Secret security clearance
  • May require moderate physical effort, involving standing, sitting and use of hands while performing duties, carrying or lifting up to 25 pounds
  • Working environment is mostly indoor, moderately loud at times, reasonably clean, well-lighted and well-ventilated; moderate physical hazards may exist

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Electrical Engineering or Physics
  • 10 - 12 years of relevant professional experience (or additional education/degree in lieu of experience)
  • Active DoD Top Secret or DoE Q clearance
  • Programming proficiency in test automation languages (Python, C++, C#)
