Full Job Description

This position serves as Valmont’s Manager, Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) enabling overall company strategy in driving continuous improvement with EHS best practices across the site. This position requires individual initiative on special projects to complete a wide variety of tasks that are part of Valmont’s comprehensive EHS initiatives. This includes leading site-level EHS teams and initiatives. The position will lead implementation of Valmont’s EHS Playbook for the site.  The Manager must be able to align the site’s EHS activities with Valmont’s overall enterprise-wide EHS strategies. The incumbent is responsible to swiftly detect sub-standard EHS performance using leading and lagging indicators and take action in conjunction with appropriate site and regional leadership teams. It is critical that the Manager assists others in their growth and knowledge in Environmental, Health & Safety practices. It is expected that the Manager interact with site production employees to identify and control hazards that can result in harm

Essential Functions:

  • Reports directly to the Plant Manager, with matrixed reporting to the Regional EHS Leader and may have direct reports
  • Leads development, maintenance, and continuous improvement efforts to facilitate EHS strategic initiatives at a single site
  • Partners with regional and site management to ensure consistent deployment of standards, campaigns and initiatives across the organization
  • Develops and owns the site-specific annual EHS goals to measurably reduce risks and impacts.
  • Function as the site level expert in the company’s Environment, Health and Safety (EHS) information management system to manage data related to EHS events such as injuries, workers compensation claims, near miss incidents and internal and external inspections, and environmental permits
  • Leads the risk assessment process to recognize, evaluate, and control hazards throughout the site
  • Leads the deployment of environment, health and safety teams (e.g., Safety Committee, etc.) and facilitates their engagement in ownership of the activities required to maintain compliance, reduce the site’s environment footprint and drive continuous improvement
  • Leads the team based incident investigation process to drive appropriate root cause and corrective actions
  • Collects data for reporting and permit submittals for multi-media environmental regulatory requirements
  • Serves as the site’s initial point-of-contact with national and local environmental, health and safety regulatory agencies

Other Important Details about the Role:

  • Serves as a liaison between regional and site management, risk management and human resources on applicable topics
  • Develops and support implementation of emergency management and business continuity programs
  • Leads the serious post incident reviews at their site, communication of incidents that result or have the potential to result in serious injury; partners with Regional EHS Directors/Managers to identify root causes and preventive actions are effectively deployed across the organization
  • Provides training/mentoring to regional/site representatives to strengthen EHS compliance and best practices
  • Formulates and implements actions on various EHS topics, as necessary, and shares updates with senior leadership
  • Provide training on in-house compliance assurance program (CAP) and ensures implementation across the organization
  • Ensure training programs are developed and implement to ensure regulatory compliance and incident best practices
  • Stay current with EHS/property conservation regulations and standards

Required Qualifications of Every Candidate (Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities):

  • Preferred Bachelor’s with 5+ years relevant work experience in Occupational Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Fire Protection, Environmental Science, Engineering, Sustainability or related discipline or equivalent experience is preferred or Associate’s with 7+ years’ experience or overall 10+ years’ experience
  • Minimum of 5 years of progressively increasing health and safety responsibility with an emphasis on implementation and maintenance of environmental, health and safety programs, fire prevention, sustainability and risk management
  • Track record of making effective decisions, even when dealing with limited or ambiguous information
  • Ability to lead and support corporate, division, business unit and site teams responsible for managing EHS risks
  • Prior proven experience utilizing an enterprise-wide safety information system/database

Highly Qualified Candidates Will Also Possess These Qualifications:

  • Previous experience with multi-national companies with progressive EHS programs
  • Experience with OSHA Voluntary Protection Programs (VPP) or ISO 45001, 14001 desired
  • Prior experience implementing and/or maintaining an enterprise-wide database system
  • Professional certifications preferred such as CSP, ASP, CHMM, CIH (or similar certification)
  • Experience in a similar heavy manufacturing industry

Working Environment and Physical Efforts:

Work is typically performed in an office setting with regular visits to manufacturing facilities and locations. While visiting the manufacturing areas of the plant, use of PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) is required at all times.  The incumbent is regularly required to sit for extended periods of time, as well as talk and listen on the phone and in personal conversations or meetings. Domestic and international travel represents up to 5% of the work schedule and includes transportation by vehicle and by air. This position requires movement around the office and manufacturing facilities as well as the ability to drive a vehicle to and from the various locations including the occasional transportation of other team members. This position may require lifting, carrying, bending, kneeling, pivoting, reaching, standing, climbing stairs, handling, gripping, grasping and visually inspecting equipment. Overall the physical effort level is considered light. Heavy equipment can be moved with a dolly or the aid of a hoist. Movement of heavy equipment is rare. Environment is fast paced and demanding most of the time.  The employee frequently is required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms while working in the office with various files and forms and while working on the computer.  The employee is occasionally required to move about the office.  Incumbent must utilize proper ergonomic safeguards such as monitor height and positions, keyboard location and height and proper wrists rests. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 15 pounds in working with large files, binders, and computer equipment.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.
