Job Description
About the Role:
Teledyne FLIR is scaling its Early Fire Detection (EFD) portfolio — UL-listed thermal cameras that integrate directly into fire alarm control panels. We need an Application Engineer who lives at the intersection of the thermal camera, the FACP, and the integrator's sales team / technicians. You will be the technical voice customers call when they need help specifying, designing-in, wiring-up, or commissioning an EFD system. This is a hybrid technical / sales role. You will partner closely with our Sales Director and Regional Sales Managers, but your charter is to make the technology work in the field, enable our integrator channel to succeed, and bring field intelligence back to Product Management.
Ideal candidate will be in Houston, Texas; other locations include Dallas or Atlanta.
If you have spent your career keeping fire alarm systems running and want to bring the next generation of thermal detection technology to the field, we want to hear from you.
What You'll Do:
Pre-Sales Application Engineering
- Join sales calls to answer product application, code compliance (NFPA 72, UL 2684), and integration questions.
- Recommend the right EFD SKU, camera placement, camera layouts, and integration path for each opportunity.
- Support quote and BOM reviews to ensure technically sound configurations before order.
Integrator Enablement
- Develop and deliver product training programs—remote and on-site—to enable fire protection industry to successfully design, sell and install FLIR thermal fire detection systems.
Design Assist
- Review integrator drawings in Bluebeam, AutoCAD, and/or Revit and provide application guidance — camera placement, coverage geometry, FACP zoning, and network topology.
- Design thermal camera fire detection system layouts with customer provided drawings, manage process from 10% design review through full system commissioning.
Sales Applications Support
- Serve as Tier 2/3 applications support for FLIR EFD products, answering integrator and end-user questions on wiring, addressing, FACP integration, IP configuration, and commissioning.
- Build the internal knowledge base of common failure modes, integration playbooks, and troubleshooting workflows.
Commissioning & Field Sales / Support
- Travel on-site (25–35%) for first-article commissioning, integrator ride-alongs, and troubleshooting escalations.
- Support projects post-award through acceptance testing and handoff.
Voice of the Field
- Feed installer pain points, RMA trends, and code interpretation questions back to Product Management to shape the EFD roadmap.
- Track competitive activity and emerging standards relevant to thermal imaging in fire detection.
What You Will Need:
- Proficient in fire life safety technical support, applications engineering, or field commissioning — ideally at an FACP manufacturer (Notifier, Siemens, Honeywell, Bosch, Fike, Edwards) or a national integrator.
- Hands-on experience commissioning fire alarm systems and troubleshooting FACP integration issues (SLC loops, relay logic, addressable devices, network modules).
- Working knowledge of NFPA 72, UL 2684, 464, 864 and how AHJs interpret them.
- NICET Level II or III in Fire Alarm Systems (Level III preferred). Company will support path to CFPS (Certified Fire Protection Specialist).
- Comfortable designing in Bluebeam, AutoCAD, and/or Revit
- Basic IP networking literacy (IP addressing, VLANs, PoE); willingness to grow into thermal/vision system expertise.
- Strong written and verbal communicator — able to explain a wiring issue to a technician on a rooftop and a code interpretation to an FPE in the same afternoon.
- Comfortable with 35% travel to customers, integrator sites, commissioning events, and trade shows.
- Self-directed and effective working remotely within a collaborative, cross-functional team.
Nice to Have:
- Experience with thermal imaging, video-based fire detection, or aspirating smoke detection.
- Experience supporting BESS, data center, warehouse, or industrial fire protection applications.
- IP camera / VMS familiarity (ONVIF, RTSP, cloud-managed devices).
- Prior involvement with NFPA technical committees, UL working groups, or code development.
- Curriculum design or LMS experience for integrator training programs
What Teledyne FLIR offers you:
- Opportunity to develop your career with the international world leading company in thermal and sensing technology.
- A unique opportunity to experience how cutting-edge sensor technology and software come together under one roof. We do our research & development and manufacturing in-house.
- Friendly culture with a focus on collaboration, problem solving and creativity.
- Work closely with Product management, Business Development, and Application Support.
- Competitive compensation and benefits.
