Job DescriptionYour OpportunityStantec is seeking a drinking water focused process engineer to join our team in the London, Waterloo, Toronto, or Stoney Creek Ontario offices. These offices support projects throughout southwestern Ontario and work with brilliant specialists from across our North American operations.
Within this position, you can leverage the process engineering and municipal water treatment design knowledge gained through your education and early career. Under the guidance of our senior engineering staff, you will work on municipal drinking water treatment projects in a supporting capacity. At a high level your tasks may include the development of engineering and financial calculations, participating in the design of water treatment facilities, engineering calculations, technical reports, providing proposal support, and independent field work. The projects that may be assigned are broad, varied, and diverse in scope, and often require seamlessly working with a diverse project team.
We are looking for a self-starter with an entrepreneurial mindset, who can quickly get up to speed and grow into the role. It is expected that you have obtained your professional engineering designation or have the ability to obtain within 12 months. Many of the challenges we tackle for our clients are complex and multi-faceted, requiring comprehensive analytical skills often gained through rigorous academic study. Although not a requirement, advanced degrees in engineering and business administration are highly desired.
Your Key Responsibilities - Consistently demonstrate a commitment to the Health and Safety culture within Stantec
- Manage multiple assignments and competing deadlines while providing proactive communication to project managers and technical leads.
- Support the planning, assessment, and design of municipal drinking water facilities, including treatment plants, pumping stations, storage facilities, and associated process systems.
- Contribute to engineering assessments, technical memoranda, design basis reports, business cases, and other technical studies for drinking water facilities
- Perform engineering analyses, process calculations, hydraulic assessments, data evaluation, and water quality reviews to support planning, design, optimization, and rehabilitation projects.
- Participate in condition assessments, feasibility studies, design projects, and treatment process evaluations for existing and proposed drinking water infrastructure.
- Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams, including civil, structural, mechanical, electrical, and instrumentation disciplines, to develop integrated design solutions.
- Build and maintain positive working relationships with municipal clients, regulators, contractors, vendors, and subconsultants through professional communication.
- Conduct site visits, field investigations, and facility inspections to support planning, design, construction, and business development activities.
- Assist with applications and approvals required under Ontario drinking water regulations and support coordination with regulatory agencies
- Support contract administration and construction services, including shop drawing reviews, responses to contractor inquiries, site observations, commissioning support, and review of construction progress.
- Assist with proposal preparation, project planning, scheduling, budgeting, and delivery of technical project work.
- Work effectively in a hybrid environment, balancing office, remote, and field-based assignments as project needs require.
QualificationsYour Capabilities and Credentials - Understanding of general concepts of relevant areas of drinking water engineering.
- Ability to participate and collaborate in a project team setting and to engage in creative and critical thought.
- Ability to organize and prioritize work to meet project budget and schedule.
- Demonstrated creativity, foresight, and engineering judgment in anticipating and solving problems.
- Understanding of engineering concepts and ability to communicate ideas to others.
- Effectively communicates project issues with the contractor, project team and clients in the execution of engineering projects.
- Strong presentation, technical, and soft communication skills. Experience working with municipal clients considered an asset.
- Understanding of Microsoft Office Suite is required; proficiency in engineering applications such as AutoCAD and Revit software packages are considered an asset.
- Completion of an advanced degree related to drinking water treatment process engineering disciplines considered an asset.
- Holds a valid drivers' license.
Education and Experience - Bachelor's degree in Chemical, Environmental, Civil, or related Engineering discipline from an accredited institution.
- Master's degree or other advanced degree in Engineering is considered an asset.
- Registered Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in Ontario, or eligible for registration.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in municipal drinking water infrastructure planning, assessment, design, and construction.
- Experience delivering drinking water related studies, condition assessments, master plans, and facility upgrade projects for municipal clients is considered an asset.
- Familiarity with Ontario drinking water regulations and municipal approval processes is considered an asset.
Typical office environment working with computers and sitting at a desk. Field work may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather. Our group operates under a hybrid work strategy with work expectations being a combination of work from home and in-office support, however, the successful applicant for this role will be expected to spend a majority of their work week working from the London, Waterloo, Toronto or Stoney Creek Ontario office (3-4 days/week).
