Position Overview

The Illinois Department of Corrections is looking to hire a highly organized and detail-oriented Licensed Registered Nurse, Corrections Nurse Trainee. This position will be responsible for performing direct nursing care to individuals in a correctional facility. The successful candidate shall demonstrate a valid Illinois License and good oral and written communication skills, be a self-starter, and be able to carry out nursing assignments pursuant to the direction of medical personnel in a correctional setting. Essential Functions

  • Performs on-the-job training in a variety of nursing care functions, such as administering medications, monitoring vital signs and examining individuals in custody utilizing nursing assessment skills and techniques.
  • Receives formal training on how to assess patient progress.
  • Receives hands-on training in proper procedures to set up, operate and monitor special equipment, such as respirators, and suction devices, AED, oxygen.
  • Receives extensive on-the-job training.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires graduation from an approved nursing education program resulting in an associate or diploma degree in nursing or a bachelor's degree in nursing.
  • Requires licensure as a registered nurse in the State of Illinois.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Prefers at least one (1) year of nursing experience in a correctional setting.
  • Prefers at least one (1) year of experience working in mental health.
  • Prefers at least one (1) year of experience problem solving in a nursing position.
  • Prefers at least one (1) year of experience working on an interdisciplinary team.


Conditions Of Employment

  • Requires current cardiopulmonary resuscitation certification.
  • Required to maintain a current active licensure as a registered nurse in the State of Illinois.
  • Requires the ability to pass the IDOC/IDJJ background check
  • Requires the ability to pass a drug screen. The use of unauthorized drugs by an employee, regardless of the position held is prohibited.
  • Required to utilize digital technology, tools, platforms, and processes in managing and supporting various digital enhancements for greater efficiency, productivity, and digital transformation efforts within the department.
