Job Location: Northwest, MO

Annual Salary: $82,000.08 - $90,000.00

The Animal Health Division, under the direction of the state veterinarian, is responsible for controlling, eradicating and testing for livestock disease in Missouri. This is accomplished through testing, vaccinations and regulatory programs involving cattle, swine, horses, poultry, exotic animals, sheep, goats and small animals as provided under the Diseased Animal Law.

Our program is looking for a Veterinarian in the Northwest area of Missouri. Applicant must reside in one of the following counties or be willing to relocate: Jackson, Atchison, Nodaway, Worth, Harrison, Mercer, Holt, Andrew, Gentry, DeKalb, Daviess, Grundy, Buchanan, Clinton, Caldwell, Livingston, Platte, Clay, Ray, or Carroll. This is a field and administrative veterinary position and will work out of your home.

The salary indicated represents the current regular pay rate for this position. If the individual selected is eligible for a pay differential (e.g., Years of Service), it will be added to total compensation on their paycheck. A pay differential does not raise base pay.

Responsibilities - What you'll do

  • Work as an extension of the State Veterinarian by providing information and regulatory guidance to accredited veterinarians, producers, and the public to ensure the safety of Missouri's livestock industry and to ensure agricultural products for human consumption are safe and wholesome.
  • Assist with diversified programs for control and/or eradication of livestock diseases such as brucellosis, tuberculosis, pseudorabies, chronic wasting disease (CWD), and equine infectious anemia in a designated district of the state.
  • Manage and travel an assigned geographical territory to conduct official inspections of livestock markets, slaughter establishments, hatcheries and/or breeder facilities to ensure compliance with state and federal statutes and regulations; identify violations and recommend corrective measures to owners or managers. Some overnight travel and statewide travel will be required.
  • Act as a Foreign Animal Disease Diagnostician (FADD) performing investigations and responding accordingly.
  • Contact owners of infected or suspect herds or flocks and explain regulations relating to disease control and eradication; prepare individualized plans for infected herds or flocks; initiate testing, tagging, branding or depopulation procedures when necessary; issue quarantines, make recommendations to State Veterinarian and Deputy State Veterinarian regarding quarantine releases.
  • Conduct meetings with private veterinarians, livestock owners and producers, market operators, dealers and other interested groups to explain and promote state and federal animal health statutes, regulations and programs.
  • Prepare and upload reports involving official inspections and complaint investigations into a centralized database, prepare photo documentation, and maintain an advanced technical competence in common software functions.
  • Assist with other Animal Health Division personnel and private veterinarians performing health inspections at the Missouri State Fair, local livestock exhibits and large exhibitions throughout the state.
  • Ensure compliance to maintain a Missouri State Veterinary License, including continuing education.
  • Ensure compliance to maintain Category II accreditation with USDA.
  • Other Duties as assigned.

Qualifications - All you need for success

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Graduation from an accredited College of Veterinary Medicine AND
  • Must have, or have the ability to obtain, a license to practice veterinary medicine in the State of Missouri.
  • Must have, or have the ability to obtain, federal accreditation to perform animal regulatory work within the time frames established by the Missouri Dept. of Agriculture.
  • Must possess a valid MO Driver's License.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Two (2) or more years of experience as a veterinarian involving the care and treatment of large animals.
  • Ability to interpret and apply statutes and regulations relating to animal health programs.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and prepare complete and concise reports.
  • Extensive software skills, including proficiency in common database functions, fiscal analysis, and excellent written communication skills.
  • Ability to work in an independent fashion, including the establishment and prioritization of tasks, and good time management skills.
