Current employees are encouraged to apply through our careers page at https://unitedutility.com/careers About The Role We are seeking a Distribution Engineer with an active Professional Engineer (PE) license to provide technical leadership and quality control (QC) oversight for electric utility distribution infrastructure projects. This role is responsible for supporting project teams QA/QC through design review and construction support activities while ensuring engineering deliverables meet applicable codes, utility standards, and client requirements. This position has possibility of being remote. Key Responsibilities
  • Serve as Quality Control lead/reviewer for electric utility distribution engineering deliverables, including designs, plans, calculations, specifications, and bill of materials.
  • Work within established QA/QC workflows and review processes to verify completeness, constructability, and compliance with client standards and applicable codes.
  • Perform independent technical reviews of distribution designs such as overhead and underground systems, pole replacements, reconductoring, voltage conversion, capacitor banks, regulator placements, pad-mount equipment, switchgear, and network/spot systems (as applicable to the client).
  • Review staking sheets, plan-and-profile drawings, structure loading/strength calculations, guying, grounding, clearances, and equipment ratings; confirm coordination with protection and controls requirements when applicable.
  • Provide mentorship and technical guidance to engineers, designers, and drafters; support continuous improvement of design quality and standardization.
  • Coordinate with project managers to align QC milestones with schedules; document QC comments, dispositions, and corrective actions.
  • Support client/utility standards maintenance efforts (typical details, material standards, drafting standards) and participate in lessons-learned reviews.
  • Interface with utility clients, municipalities, and stakeholders as needed to clarify requirements, resolve design issues, and support permitting.
  • Provide construction support including RFIs, field issue resolutions, and as-built reviews; support outage planning and work package readiness as required.
  • Maintain familiarity with relevant tools and systems (as applicable), such as GIS, work management systems, CAD platforms, and design/analysis software.
  • Support proposal development and scope definition for distribution engineering and QC services.
  • Uphold safety, ethics, and compliance expectations; demonstrate professional responsibility consistent with PE licensure.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering (or closely related engineering discipline) from an accredited institution.
  • Active Professional Engineer (PE) license in at least one U.S. state; ability to obtain additional licensure as required by project needs.
  • Typically, 6+ years of experience in electric utility distribution engineering (overhead and/or underground) within a consulting firm, utility, or contractor environment.
  • Demonstrated experience performing technical reviews and/or leading QC/QA for engineering deliverables.
  • Working knowledge of electric utility distribution standards, construction practices, and applicable codes/regulations (e.g., NESC; NEC where applicable; OSHA awareness).
  • Ability to review and interpret utility drawings, one-lines, specifications, and material standards; strong attention to detail.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to provide clear review comments and coordinate issue resolution.
  • Proficiency with common engineering and office tools (e.g., Microsoft Office); ability to learn client-specific design/work management systems.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to perform limited local travel/field visits as required.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience supporting high-volume utility distribution programs involving overhead and underground distribution design packages.
  • Experience serving as Engineer of Record and/or stamping distribution design packages (as allowed/required by jurisdiction and client).
  • Familiarity with pole loading/analysis tools and methods; experience reviewing structure class, loading cases, and clearance compliance.
  • Experience with client distribution design platforms and data environments (e.g., GIS-based design, CAD standards, work management systems).
  • Understanding of distribution protection concepts (fusing, reclosers, sectionalizing, coordination) and voltage regulation.
  • Experience supporting make-ready/attachment coordination, joint-use design, and communications attachments.
  • Prior involvement in developing QC plans, checklists, and metrics; experience leading corrective/preventive actions.
  • Project management exposure (scope, schedule, budget) and client-facing consulting experience.
Work Environment / Physical Requirements This position is primarily office-based with occasional field visits to distribution facilities and job sites. Field work may involve walking on uneven terrain, exposure to outdoor weather conditions, and the use of required personal protective equipment (PPE).
