Full Job Description
OCH is currently seeking a Disability Management and Benefits Specialist. They will be responsible for leading the coordinated development and implementation of proactive disability management programs and practices, including ongoing case management that effectively prevent and manage occupational and non-occupational health-related absences.

Disability Management and Benefits Specialist with OCH:

This role directly supports employees through disability and return-to-work processes, benefits administration, and wellness programs, helping staff feel supported and valued throughout their employment journey. By providing guidance to employees and managers and ensuring the consistent application of policies and collective agreements, the Disability Management and Benefits Specialist directly contributes to Ottawa Community Housing's mission and strategic priorities.

As a Disability Management and Benefits Specialist, some of the things you will do include:

  • Coordinate, lead and support activities that enable the planning, development and delivery of a broad range of programs, initiatives and activities related to attendance and disability management, total compensation, benefits and employee wellness
  • Track, monitor, and provide case management for extended sick leave, and LTD and WSIB cases, including completing required forms, maintaining files and coordinating with benefits providers and other involved stakeholders
  • Ensures accurate inputting, updating, and validating of employee data within HRIS and with benefit carriers.
  • Develops and maintains ongoing relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including staff, management, medical providers, insurance carriers, legal representatives and other third-party entities
  • Supports ergonomic assessments and the implementation of approved recommendations
  • Coordinates initiatives and activities that engage and promote employee workplace health, safety and wellness
  • Undertake research, compile and analyzes data, and prepare reports, recommendations, and presentations that enable departmental and corporate planning, decision making and continuous improvement
  • Undertake data analysis, and support the identification of trends, observations and insights
  • Develop and maintains system that support information gathering, organization, tracking and reporting
  • Support the development, maintenance and monitoring of identified metrics and reports and data visualization graphs, charts and dashboards
  • Support and coordinate the development and implementation of human resources related policies, procedures, and documentation including communication and learning activities
  • Develop and maintain ongoing relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including staff, management, medical providers, insurance carriers, legal representatives and other third party entities
  • Monitor developments and trends in the HR industry, identifying good practices and statutory changes, and analyzing and reporting on impacts, opportunities, and risks
  • Maintain a thorough knowledge and understanding of related policies, procedures and guidelines, collective agreements and benefits contracts
  • Lead and participate in identified special initiatives and projects within the HR team and corporately
  • Coordinate the response to inquiries and provides information and advice to management and staff on human resource policies, initiatives, and programs
  • Represent OCH in a professional manner and treats all work related contacts with respect and courtesy
  • Perform work in accordance with applicable health, safety and privacy legislation, policies and procedures, and all other legislation, policies and procedures relevant to area of work

What you bring:

Education & Experience:

A typical candidate will have the following qualifications and experience.Exceptional candidates with different qualifications will be considered at the discretion of the employer if demonstrated experience, knowledge, and ability warrant.

  • Completion of a post-secondary program in human resources, business, health science, or a related field
  • A minimum four (4) years of related human resources experience in a unionized environment
  • Experience developing and implementing programs, processes and systems and drawing insights from data
  • Experience with occupational/non-occupational health claims management
  • Possess, or working towards, a Certified Human Resources Professional designation is preferred
  • Broad knowledge of Human Resources practices and procedures
  • Knowledge of best practices and techniques related to short and long term disability case management
  • Broad familiarity with project management principles and practices
  • General knowledge of total compensation and benefits practices
  • Knowledge of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, database applications and other standard corporate software
  • Understanding of the values, vision and mission of Ottawa Community Housing and a commitment to support those objectives
  • Knowledge of applicable health and safety legislation, including the rights and responsibilities of workers and supervisors
  • Must be familiar with all applicable statutory requirements, policies, procedures and guidelines relevant to area of work

  • Excellent organizational skills including the ability to manage multiple priorities under pressure
  • Ability to write professionally, synthesize data and organize written material effectively

  • Excellent interpersonal skills allowing for appropriate professional relationships with colleagues at all levels within the organization, as well as, with external stakeholders
  • Strong attention to detail allowing for thoroughness and accuracy in accomplishing tasks
  • Works in a confidential manner and demonstrates tact and diplomacy when dealing with sensitive issues
  • Makes appropriate judgement, able to assess potential risk to the corporation, and recognizes when issues should be escalated
  • Demonstrated ability to gather information and relay it clearly, concisely and accurately
  • Proficiency in English, oral, reading and writing is required.
  • Proficiency in French, oral, reading and writing is an asset
  • Proficient in the use of information technology such as mobile devices and computer systems in the performance of work
