The Director (Academic Program Management Supervisor 2) leads the Flow Cytometry Shared Resource (FCSR), a self-supporting, interdisciplinary research support program serving a broad faculty user base across the Davis and Sacramento campuses. The FCSR operates two full-service laboratories (Davis and Sacramento), a satellite location in the College of Biological Sciences in Davis, and a newly opened full-service laboratory at Aggie Square in Sacramento.

Working under broad direction from faculty leadership, the Director functions independently and holds full responsibility for the scientific and operational leadership of the unit. The Director partners closely with the FCSR's Faculty Scientific Program Advisor, faculty users, and campus leadership within the School of Medicine, the Comprehensive Cancer Center, and the Office of Research to support the design, execution, and analysis of flow cytometry experiments, and is responsible for the safe and effective operation of complex cytometry equipment across all FCSR sites.

  • M.S. or higher degree with ten or more years of experience and expertise in flow cytometry and immunological assays.
  • The Director should possess significant expertise in scientific technology and flow cytometry with an understanding of the impact of technology on research efforts and previous interactions with scientific operations.
  • The Director will possess 5-10 years of experience directing the research activities of junior personnel. The Director will oversee the research support activities of junior research associates, to include experiment planning, data analysis, cell sorting activities, instrument operation and laboratory maintenance.
  • The Director must demonstrate advanced knowledge of flow cytometry instrument design, including the physics of optical properties of light, digital and analog electronic processing, and fluidic sorting systems.
  • The Director must have significant expertise operating and maintaining complex research instrumentation, developing new flow cytometry research methodologies, and analyzing complex, multi-parameter data sets.
  • The Director must be able to communicate advanced flow cytometry theory and practice clearly to faculty and post-graduate researchers, and to summarize and present data sets in meetings with faculty and senior administrative officers.
  • The Director must have the ability to supervise and manage junior lab personnel, including overseeing their experiment planning, data analysis, cell sorting activities, instrument operation, and laboratory maintenance.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, along with strong organizational and management skills, are essential.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Doctorate in related area and / or equivalent experience training
  • A demonstrated record of flow cytometry-focused research publications utilizing multi-parameter and spectral cytometry techniques is preferred, as evidence of the technical expertise described above.
  • Preferred candidates will also have analytic skills sufficient to develop procedures that streamline cytometer operation and to assist UC Davis administrators and facility leadership with budget planning and usage reporting.
  • Preferred management experience includes the ability to lead organizational change, and to audit and interpret results diplomatically.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to effectively communicate with a broad range of individuals - including junior personnel, students, and faculty - are preferred, as is demonstrated experience managing multiple concurrent projects.

Department Overview

The Flow Cytometry Shared Resource (FCSR) is a Core Facility in the Department of Cell Biology and Human Anatomy has a research presence in Tupper Hall, in the Health Sciences District of the Davis campus, as well as Aggie Square and the Oak Park Research Building on the Sacramento campus. Research strengths in the department include the biology of vision, developmental biology, neurobiology, cell biology, and stem cells.

Currently, over 110 faculty principal investigators rely on the expertise of the Flow Cytometry Shared Resource (FCSR) to ensure the success of their research, including members of the Schools of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine and the Colleges of Engineering, Letters and Science, Agricultural and Environmental Sciences and Biological Sciences.

The Director directly supervises two career laboratory staff and two Student Assistant IVs, and is fully accountable for personnel supervision; multi-site operations; scientific support; instrumentation; training and education.

The Director must possess over 10 years of advanced research experience in cell sorting and complex multi-color spectral flow cytometry, and must be recognized campus-wide as a technical expert in flow cytometry theory, practice, and implementation.

Beyond scientific and supervisory duties, the Director oversees the financial management of this large, self-supporting unit. This includes negotiating equipment service contract pricing, securing funding for new equipment, managing operational costs, formulating rate proposals in compliance with federal costing policies (in coordination with departmental finance leadership), forecasting budgets, and managing personnel appointments and human resources matters for the two technicians and two Student Assistant IVs supporting the Davis and Sacramento facilities.
