The Position
Genentech is seeking a transformational Director, Safety to drive physical safety excellence across a world-class pharmaceutical campus. Reporting directly to the Executive Director, Security, Safety, Health and Environment (SSHE), this pivotal leadership position will be responsible for providing strategic leadership and comprehensive oversight of physical safety programs across the Genentech South San Francisco campus and leading a team of safety professionals. Serve as the primary safety advisor to site senior and executive leadership, acting as the key internal and external representative for the organization.
The Opportunity
The Director, Safety will play a critical role in ensuring a world-class safe work environment, maintaining compliance with local, federal, and Roche Corporate Safety, Health, and Environment (SHE) requirements, and spearsheading advanced safety initiatives to aspire to zero injuries. As a member of the SSHE leadership team, you’ll partner with the Executive Director and team to develop and implement multi-year strategies to proactively protect people, identify and reduce risk, and enhance the overall safety culture. To excel in this position, the ideal candidate will possess 12+ years of progressive experience and a unique blend of strong technical expertise, exceptional leadership skills, and strategic agility.
Key Responsibilities
Provide comprehensive oversight and strategic leadership for all campus physical safety programs, spanning critical hazard management, process safety, and regulatory compliance.
Ensure full compliance with local, state, and federal regulations while identifying control strategies and leading root-cause analysis for physical safety incidents.
Lead, coach, and develop a high-performing team of safety professionals, dedicating significant time to staffing and operational excellence
Align site-specific safety objectives with global Roche sustainability policies, ensuring effective adaptation to evolving site operations.
Serve as the principal safety advisor to site senior leadership, translating complex organizational strategies into actionable business goals.
Cultivate collaborative relationships with local SHE authorities, regulatory agencies and cross-functional business partners to influence decision-making and execute company-wide policies.
Architect and implement comprehensive long-term environmental strategies and robust contingency frameworks to proactively mitigate operational risks.
Who You Are
Bachelor’s degree in environmental engineering, physical science, life science, engineering, health & safety, or a related field.
12+ years of progressive, relevant work experience in Safety, Health, and Environment (SHE) roles within site and/or corporate functions. Physical safety experience in high-hazard or large-scale manufacturing / pharmaceutical / biotechnology industries highly preferred.
Exceptional leadership; experience successfully leading safety teams preferred
Deep working knowledge and experience in physical safety programs to provide technical guidance and mentorship to SHE staff members
Demonstrated working knowledge and understanding of state (Cal/OSHA), federal (OSHA), and local requirements for physical safety programs and a broad range of technical expertise to solve difficult and complex problems.
Advanced knowledge of incident command processes, facility operations, and complex manufacturing systems.
Professional certification in one or more areas (e.g., Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or Registered Professional Engineer) preferred.
Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to successfully negotiate with regulatory agencies and senior operations leaders.

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of South San Francisco, CA is $169,600.00 - $315,000.00 USD. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. A discretionary annual bonus may be available based on individual and Company performance. This position also qualifies for the benefits detailed at the link provided below.
