Full Job Description
Position Summary: Director of Product Management Energy

The Director of Product Management for Energy Experiences will act as the single-threaded technical product owner responsible for driving the lifecycle, prioritization, and execution of the smart home energy management roadmap. This is a high-visibility, senior individual contributor position that requires a unique blend of strategic foresight, profound customer empathy, and deep technical execution. You will operate with a high degree of independence, taking complex energy management challenges and translating them into seamless, scalable consumer experiences that bridge the gap between home automation and grid sustainability.

In this role, you will own the product strategy to deeply integrate the Vivint smart home system with broader energy management solutions (such as intelligent load shifting, demand response programs, solar/storage orchestration, and consumption optimization). Your ultimate mission is to build integrated, intelligent features that allow the Vivint Home ecosystem to work seamlessly on behalf of our customers-minimizing their carbon footprint, keeping them comfortable, and saving them money without requiring manual effort.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Customer Insights & Energy Data Mastery
    • Deep Consumer Understanding: Act as the organization's primary champion for the user, developing an exhaustive understanding of how, when, and why customers consume energy within their households today.
    • Behavioral & Consumption Data Expertise: Utilize deep data expertise to analyze complex customer usage patterns, device telemetry, and household power metrics, transforming these insights into actionable energy optimization strategies.
    • Feature & Hardware Gap Analysis: Continuously identify friction points and critical gaps in our current product features and physical hardware suite, determining exactly how our ambient system can be evolved to better automate household efficiency.
  • Roadmap Strategy & Energy Ecosystem Execution
    • Data-Driven Energy Roadmap: Own the multi-year technical product roadmap, requirements definitions, and feature sequencing to transform Vivint into a central, proactive residential energy hub.
    • Cross-Functional Hardware/Software Integration: Bridge the gap between physical smart home endpoints (thermostats, smart plugs, panels) and utility-facing software layers, managing the product lifecycle from initial data modeling through to over-the-air (OTA) feature deployment.
    • Smart Home & Grid Orchestration: Act as a core thought leader on how home automation hardware can interact with external energy programs, ensuring our system can respond intelligently to grid events while preserving a premium user experience.
  • Influence & Matrixed Leadership
    • Independent Delivery: Operate autonomously as a senior individual contributor, driving complex, multi-phase product launches across the organization without relying on a large team of direct reports.
    • Cross-Functional Influence: Lead and align matrixed peer teams across Hardware/Software Engineering, Data Science, UX Design, Corporate Sustainability, and External Utility/Regulatory Partners to maintain delivery velocity.
    • Executive Communication: Serve as the primary product spokesperson for your domain, clearly communicating roadmap milestones, energy savings analytics, and long-term product health to executive leadership.

Required Skills & Functional Dimensions
  • Autonomous Strategy & Extreme Ambiguity: Proven ability to independently manage a complex technical product domain, establishing a clear execution path and building product frameworks with incomplete data sets.
  • Advanced Analytics & Energy Literacy: Exceptional capability to dissect complex consumption data sets, identifying core metrics and behavioral trends that reveal opportunities for automatic energy conservation and grid integration.
  • Versatile Technical Literacy: Comfortable diving deep into hardware constraints and firmware capabilities, as well as cloud APIs, data pipelines, and distributed energy resource management software (DERMS).
  • Systems Thinking: Strong product design instincts with a focus on building cohesive, ecosystem-wide experiences rather than siloed, standalone features.

Required Education & Experience
  • Experience: 6-8+ years of technical product management experience, with a solid track record of shipping consumer-facing software features, smart home solutions, or energy-adjacent tech platforms at scale.
  • Data-Driven Delivery Track Record: Demonstrated experience working closely alongside data science and analytics teams to monitor, evaluate, and evolve live, mass-market consumer experiences.
  • Cross-Functional Partnership: Proven success working daily alongside engineering architects, software developers, and industrial designers to deliver high-quality customer experiences.
  • Education: B.S. or M.S. in a Technical Field (Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Energy Systems, or a related quantitative discipline); equivalent practical technical experience considered.
