Full Job Description
DIRECTOR OF OPERATIONS

Full-Time National Executive Leadership

Position Summary

The Director of Operations is a senior leadership role that sits at the intersection of executive strategy and field execution. This individual serves as a direct extension of the anesthesia leadership team - working closely with the VP of Operations and clinical leadership to translate organizational priorities into operational reality across all markets.

This role is responsible for leading, developing, and holding accountable a team of Regional Operations Managers while personally driving the operationalization of key initiatives across the organization. The Director of Operations does not just oversee execution - they are a thinking partner to senior leadership, a decision-maker in the field, and the connective tissue between strategy and the people doing the work.
Reporting Structure

Reports to: VP of Operations

Direct reports: Regional Anesthesia Operations Managers

Works closely with: Clinical Leadership, Credentialing, Finance, HR, Contracting, and facility/market stakeholders
Role in the Organization

The Director of Operations functions as a senior member of the anesthesia leadership team. In practice, this means:
  • Serving as the primary operational bridge between VP-level leadership and the regional operations managers who run day-to-day market activity
  • Being a trusted partner to the VP of Operations and clinical co-leadership in designing, pressure-testing, and rolling out operational initiatives
  • Representing operations leadership in cross-functional discussions with finance, credentialing, HR, and contracting
  • Acting as the first escalation point for regional managers before issues reach VP-level - and knowing when they need to
  • Bringing both strategic judgment and hands-on execution capability to the role - this leader is equally comfortable in a leadership team meeting and in the weeds of a market problem
Key Responsibilities
Operational Leadership & Initiative Execution
  • Partner directly with the VP of Operations and clinical leadership to develop, refine, and execute operational strategies across the organization
  • Translate high-level organizational initiatives into structured, market-ready operational plans with clear owners, timelines, and success metrics
  • Lead cross-functional implementation efforts - coordinating with credentialing, finance, HR, and contracting to ensure initiatives are operationalized cleanly and consistently across all markets
  • Identify operational gaps and inefficiencies across the organization and drive structured, scalable solutions that do not require VP-level involvement to sustain
  • Own the operational playbook: build, document, and continuously improve the standard processes that govern how markets operate, how providers are onboarded, and how performance is managed
Operations Manager Leadership & Development
  • Lead a team of Regional Anesthesia Operations Managers, providing day-to-day direction, support, and accountability
  • Set clear performance expectations for each operations manager, conduct regular 1:1s and performance reviews, and develop individualized growth plans
  • Serve as the primary escalation point for operations managers facing market-level challenges that require senior judgment or cross-functional coordination
  • Build a high-performing, cohesive ops team by establishing shared standards, consistent workflows, and a culture of accountability and execution
  • Identify capability gaps on the operations team and address them through coaching, process improvement, or hiring
Market Performance & Oversight
  • Maintain visibility into key performance metrics across all regional markets, including OR utilization, provider productivity, scheduling efficiency, credentialing timelines, and financial performance
  • Hold operations managers accountable to market-level performance targets and drive corrective action where needed
  • Conduct regular market reviews with operations managers, surfacing trends, risks, and opportunities to VP-level leadership
  • Support new market launches, contract transitions, and facility onboarding efforts by providing direct operational leadership during high-complexity periods
  • Ensure coverage continuity and operational stability across all markets, proactively identifying risks before they become crises
Provider & Stakeholder Relations
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with facility administrators, OR directors, Medical Directors, and clinical leaders across markets
  • Serve as a senior operational point of contact for escalated provider relations issues, facility concerns, and contract-level disputes
  • Partner with clinical leadership to align operational execution with clinical priorities and provider experience goals
  • Support the credentialing and onboarding function by ensuring operations managers are driving provider activation timelines and that no provider is delayed by process failures
Financial & Operational Accountability
  • Partner with finance and VP leadership on regional P&L performance, identifying cost drivers and opportunities to improve margin across markets
  • Oversee the operational inputs to financial performance: provider utilization, scheduling efficiency, coverage costs, and administrative overhead
  • Support the processing of merit increases, compensation adjustments, and pay structure changes by ensuring regional operations managers have the context and approvals needed to move efficiently
  • Develop and present regular operational performance reports to executive leadership, with clear analysis and recommended actions
Cross-Functional Coordination
  • Serve as the operational lead in cross-functional workstreams involving credentialing, finance, HR, and contracting - ensuring that organizational initiatives are implemented with operational rigor
  • Translate decisions made at the leadership level into clear, actionable direction for the operations team - and translate field-level realities back to leadership so decisions are well-informed
  • Lead or co-lead key organizational projects, from system implementations to provider model transitions to market restructurings
Qualifications
Required
  • Bachelor's degree in Healthcare Administration, Business, or a related field; MBA or MHA strongly preferred
  • 7+ years of progressive operations experience in healthcare, with at least 3 years in a leadership role managing other operations professionals
  • Demonstrated track record of operationalizing strategic initiatives in a multi-site or multi-market environment
  • Experience managing distributed teams and holding people accountable to performance standards across geographies
  • Strong financial acumen; able to read and act on P&L data, understand cost drivers, and connect operational decisions to financial outcomes
  • Exceptional communication skills - equally effective presenting to executive leadership and coaching a frontline manager through a difficult market situation
Preferred
  • Experience in anesthesia, physician practice management, or a national physician management company
  • Familiarity with provider credentialing workflows, payer enrollment, and 1099 contractor management
  • Experience working across large health system relationships (HCA, SAGA, SCA, USPI or similar)
  • Demonstrated experience building operational infrastructure from the ground up in a scaling organization
Core Competencies
  • Executive presence with the credibility to operate as a peer to clinical and business leadership
  • Strategic thinker who can also execute - comfortable moving between long-range planning and same-week problem-solving
  • People leader who develops talent, builds team culture, and holds people accountable without micromanaging
  • Structured communicator who brings clarity to complex situations and keeps leadership well-informed without over-escalating
  • Ownership mentality - takes responsibility for outcomes, not just activities
  • Builder's mindset - energized by creating systems, processes, and team capability in an environment that is still maturing
