The Director of Veterinary Services directs comprehensive herd health management, clinical operations, and advanced reproductive technologies at the STgenetics Ohio Heifer Center. This role leads a team of veterinary technicians and assistants providing elite medical care to high-genomic dairy calves, oversees facility-wide biosecurity and disease-free herd certifications, and directs juvenile in vitro embryo transfer (JIVET) workflows. The position also plays an active role in clinical instruction, mentoring veterinary students on-site, with pathways to expand advanced reproductive procedural volume and pursue AETA certification for the right candidate.
Key ResponsibilitiesTeam Leadership & Clinical Care
- Direct, mentor, and schedule a team of approximately 6 veterinary technicians and
veterinary assistants in daily calf husbandry, health monitoring, and medical treatments.
- Establish, review, and optimize ongoing standard operating procedures (SOPs) for calf health, neonatal care, nutrition, immunology, and therapeutic protocols.
- Provide clinical oversight and hands-on instruction to visiting veterinary students and interns during on-site rotations and clinical experiences.
Advanced Reproductive Technologies (JIVET)
- Lead the operational workflow for the juvenile in vitro embryo transfer (JIVET) program, managing donor selection, synchronization protocols, health monitoring, and procedure scheduling.
- Perform or master advanced reproductive procedures (training provided for specialized juvenile oocyte recovery and handling).
- Opportunities exist to expand the scope and procedural volume of the advanced reproductive program based on candidate interest and demonstrated skill.
Herd Biosecurity & Disease-Free Certification
- Design, implement, and maintain rigorous herd-level testing programs to ensure pathogen-free status and regulatory compliance.
- Coordinate routine diagnostic sampling, disease surveillance, and state/federal regulatory documentation for domestic and international health certifications.
- Enforce strict biosecurity measures across all calf housing, handling, and procedure areas.
Qualifications- Education: Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM / VMD) from an AVMA-accredited institution.
- Licensure & Accreditation: Active veterinary medical license in the State of Ohio (or ability to obtain upon hire); USDA Category II Veterinary Accreditation.
- Experience: Large animal or dairy clinical experience with a strong foundation in bovine health, neonatal calf management, and routine theriogenology.
- Reproductive Skills: General bovine reproductive experience required; direct experience in JIVET/OPU is a plus, but comprehensive training will be provided for an eager candidate.
- Leadership & Teaching: Proven ability to manage technical staff and an enthusiasm for teaching and mentoring veterinary students.
