Job Summary and Qualifications

The Department Director is responsible for planning, organizing, coordinating and directing all functions of the department(s) in order to support the stated mission, vision and values of Medical City Plano, the philosophy of the Department of Nursing and promote, advocate and support the nursing staff's primary commitment to protect the health, safety and rights of the individual, family or community. It is expected that the Director will effectively operate the department, continue the improvement of the department's processes and outcomes, comply with hospital and corporate policy and procedures, efficiently manage finances and resources, promote teamwork and customer satisfaction, and integrate the department services into the organization's overall plan for delivery of care and service.

  • Coordinate/integrate department services with the hospital's primary function.
  • Facilitate and direct a multidisciplinary trauma service with primary focus on developing/implementing and monitoring systems to enhance care of the trauma patient.
  • Develop/implement policies/procedures that guide/support the provision of trauma care in an evidenced-based environment.
  • Provide consultative services to health care providers, administrators, and health care consumers regarding trauma care/services.
  • Analyze data, identify trends/areas for improvement in processes, structures, and systems impacting trauma care patient outcomes.
  • Collaborate with Trauma Medical Director/trauma physicians/hospital staff to troubleshoot/problem-solve issues related to trauma patient care or process, refer to appropriate source for corrective action, and implement PI strategies to optimize patient outcomes and improve overall trauma mortality.
  • Participate in the development of trauma care systems at the community, state, and national level including such agencies as NCTTRAC, TETAF, TTCF, and Texas TQIP Collaborative.
  • Maintain responsibility for Trauma Performance Improvement and Trauma Peer Review activities.
  • Implement HCA Trauma CSG initiatives for data collection and performance improvement activities.
  • Collaborates with the Trauma Medical Director and administration to promote regionalization of trauma care throughout the Medical City Healthcare system and community.
  • Collaborate with Trauma Registry personnel to assure timely entry, valid trauma registry data, and completion of required data exports to various agencies including NCTTRAC, DSHS, Trauma CSG, and TQIP.
  • Responsible for assuring all Trauma Center verification standards are met as required by the American College of Surgeons and Texas Department Health and Human Services.
  • Collaborates with Finance Department to evaluate income sources, payment, and charges for trauma patients.
  • Assist with emergency preparedness activities for the hospital in collaboration with local agencies.
  • Provide an environment that allows the RN to exercise independent judgment within the context of interdisciplinary patient care.
  • Delegate tasks appropriate to meet the needs of the individual patient and to the skills of the employee supervised.
  • Recommend a sufficient number of qualified/competent staff to provide department services in support of provision of services.
  • Determine the qualifications/competence of personnel.
  • Continuously assess/improve department's performance.
  • Ensure the provision of orientation, in-service training and continuing education and development of staff.
  • Recommend space and other resources needed in the provision of services.
  • Promote involvement of self and staff in health promotion/educational community involvement, lifetime learning and nursing research.
  • Participate in development and evaluation of professional practice by participating on unit and/or hospital committees, special projects and attendance at staff meetings and town halls. Create environment to encourage unit-based staff participation in above.
  • Assist with emergency preparedness activities for the hospital in collaboration with local agencies.


What qualifications you will need:

Education:

  • Master's degree in nursing or related field or other appropriate post graduate degree or a plan actively in place to obtain same.

Licensure:

  • Texas State RN Licensure.

Certification/registration:

  • National certification required within 6 months of hire.

Experience:

  • 10 years nursing, 5 years management.
