Job Summary

The Director of Safety & Security plans, organizes, and directs activities to protect individuals and property, prevent crime, and monitor environmental hazards. Directs activities related to campus safety, identifies relevant risks, and develops training associated with these risks to ensure a safe and secure environment for students, employees, and visitors.

Job Duties:

  • Direct and oversee campus safety and security operations across all campus locations.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local laws, ordinances, policies, and regulations related to campus safety and security.
  • Assess safety and security risks and develop mitigation strategies.
  • Coordinate investigations, incident reporting, and follow-up activities. Monitor security procedures, access controls, and safety protocols.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain emergency response, crisis management, business continuity, and disaster preparedness plans.
  • Coordinate emergency management exercises, drills, and training programs.
  • Serve as a resource to college leadership during incidents and emergencies.
  • Evaluate campus risks and recommend improvements to enhance preparedness and resilience.
  • Supervise, train, develop, and evaluate safety and security personnel.
  • Establish operational goals and performance expectations.
  • Promote employee engagement, accountability, and professional development.
  • Provide leadership and guidance in addressing operational and personnel matters.
  • Conduct assessments and evaluations of campus activities and safety programs.
  • Ensure compliance with institutional policies and applicable regulations. Analyze security trends, incident data, and program outcomes to identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Develop and maintain departmental procedures and operational standards.
  • Partner with local law enforcement, emergency responders, and community agencies.
  • Serve as a resource to college leadership regarding safety, security, and risk management matters. Coordinate campus safety education and awareness initiatives.
  • Participate in strategic planning and college committees related to safety and security.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent in Criminal Justice, Homeland Security, Emergency Management, Public Administration, or a related field.
  • Three (3) years of progressively responsible experience in safety, security, emergency management, law enforcement, or a related field.
  • Two (2) years of management/supervisory experience
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of campus security operations, emergency management, risk mitigation, and regulatory compliance.
  • Ability to develop and implement emergency response, crisis management, and contingency plans.
  • Strong leadership, employee development, coaching, and performance management skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to influence and collaborate with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Criminal Justice, Homeland Security, Emergency Management, Public Administration, or a related field.
  • Professional certification in emergency management, campus security, law enforcement, safety, or risk management.
  • Experience developing and administering safety and security programs in a higher education environment.
  • Experience collaborating with local law enforcement, emergency management agencies, and community partners.
  • Experience with security management systems, incident reporting systems, and related technologies.
  • Previous experience in a community college setting
