Position SummaryThe Director of Pharmacy is responsible for the overall leadership, management, and clinical operation of the hospital pharmacy. This position ensures safe, effective, compliant, and cost-conscious medication-use practices while supporting the hospital's medical staff, nursing services, quality program, and patient-care objectives.
The Director provides strategic and operational leadership for pharmacy services in a Critical Access Hospital environment, including medication procurement, dispensing, clinical pharmacy services, regulatory compliance, medication safety, formulary management, pharmacy staff development, and collaboration with providers and interdisciplinary teams.
Essential ResponsibilitiesPharmacy Operations- Direct and oversee the daily operations of the hospital pharmacy.
- Establish and maintain policies, procedures, and standards for safe medication management.
- Ensure appropriate medication procurement, storage, preparation, dispensing, distribution, and disposal.
- Maintain appropriate medication inventories while controlling costs and minimizing waste and shortages.
- Develop and monitor pharmacy staffing schedules and ensure adequate coverage for hospital needs.
- Oversee pharmacy technology, automation, medication distribution systems, and related equipment.
Clinical Services- Provide or oversee clinical pharmacy services appropriate to the hospital's patient population and scope of services.
- Collaborate with physicians, advanced practice providers, nurses, and other clinicians regarding medication therapy.
- Promote evidence-based medication-use practices and antimicrobial stewardship.
- Participate in medication reconciliation, transitions of care, and medication safety initiatives.
- Support the development and maintenance of the hospital formulary.
Regulatory and Compliance- Ensure pharmacy operations comply with applicable federal and state laws and regulations.
- Maintain compliance with requirements of the Board of Pharmacy, DEA, CMS, and applicable accreditation organizations.
- Monitor controlled-substance handling, security, inventory, documentation, and reconciliation.
- Ensure compliance with hospital policies and applicable medication-management standards.
- Maintain required pharmacy records, licenses, permits, and documentation.
Quality and Patient Safety- Serve as a pharmacy leader in the hospital's quality and patient-safety programs.
- Monitor medication-related quality indicators and adverse drug events.
- Investigate medication errors and implement corrective and preventive actions.
- Participate in Pharmacy & Therapeutics Committee activities and other interdisciplinary committees.
- Develop and monitor performance-improvement initiatives related to medication use.
Leadership and Staff Development- Recruit, orient, train, supervise, and evaluate pharmacy personnel.
- Establish performance expectations and promote professional development.
- Maintain competency and continuing education requirements for pharmacy staff.
- Foster a culture of accountability, teamwork, patient safety, and service excellence.
- Develop cross-training and contingency plans appropriate for a rural/critical-access setting.
Financial and Administrative Management- Develop and manage the pharmacy department's operating budget.
- Monitor pharmaceutical expenditures and identify opportunities for cost containment without compromising patient care.
- Negotiate or participate in purchasing arrangements and medication-supply management.
- Analyze pharmacy utilization, expenses, productivity, and other departmental metrics.
- Evaluate opportunities to expand or improve pharmacy services based on community and hospital needs.
Qualifications Required- Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) or equivalent pharmacy degree from an accredited program.
- Current, unrestricted pharmacist license in the state of Kentucky
- Demonstrated leadership or supervisory experience.
- Knowledge of medication-use systems, pharmacy regulations, medication safety, and hospital operations.
Preferred- Previous pharmacy director, pharmacy manager, or hospital pharmacy leadership experience.
- Experience in a Critical Access Hospital or rural healthcare environment.
- Board certification or other relevant advanced pharmacy credentials.
- Experience with medication-use evaluation, antimicrobial stewardship, quality improvement, and regulatory readiness.
- Experience managing pharmacy budgets and medication purchasing.
- Familiarity with applicable CMS and accreditation medication-management requirements.
- Experienced in 340B medication management, program operations, and regulatory compliance.
