Director of Nursing (DON)

Position Summary

The Director of Nursing is accountable for the development and maintenance of nursing service objective and standards of nursing practice. Has administrative authority, responsibility and accountability for functions, activities, and training of nursing staff. Is responsible for the planning, development, and implementation of care delivery systems. Orients, instructs, and supervises personnel and functions. Coordinates nursing services with other departments. Maintains supplies and adequate equipment. Maintains compliance with Federal, State, and local standards and regulations to assure quality outcome of care.

Responsibilities
  • RAI, MDS & Care Planning Oversight
    Oversee the full RAI/MDS process, including electronic submission and timelines; coordinate interdisciplinary care planning; and participate in patient care conferences, admissions, and discharges.
  • Clinical Nursing Leadership & Care Coordination
    Direct total nursing care, ensure accurate nursing documentation, implement nursing procedures, maintain updated nursing manuals, and coordinate resident care with physicians and interdisciplinary teams.
  • Regulatory Compliance & Quality Improvement
    Ensure compliance with state and federal regulations, Nurse Practice Act, and Residents' Bill of Rights while promoting autonomy, confidentiality, and continuous quality improvement initiatives.
  • Medication Management & Clinical Monitoring
    Implement safe medication administration processes, collaborate with pharmacy consultants, monitor drug interactions, and complete required regulatory reporting and documentation.
  • Staffing, Budgeting & Department Efficiency
    Manage nursing department staffing and efficiency, work within budget guidelines, oversee supplies and equipment, coordinate vendor interactions, and support high-cost purchasing decisions.
  • Professional Leadership & Facility Engagement
    Promote a positive, inclusive workplace; serve as a professional role model; lead staff meetings and education; participate in audits and meetings; and maintain flexibility to support operations as needed.


Qualifications
  • Must be a Registered Nurse, currently licensed by the State of Minnesota, who has training in rehabilitation nursing, gerontology, nursing service administration, management, supervision and psychiatric or geriatric nursing before or within the first twelve (12) months after appointment as Director of Nursing Services.
  • Must qualify for employment, after criminal background study, per guidelines of Minnesota Department of Human Services.
  • Experience in healthcare, skilled nursing facility or assisted living community
