POSITION DUTIES

The Maryland Insurance Administration (MIA) is recruiting for a Director of Government Relations in the Office of the Commissioner. This position is assigned to the External Affairs and Policy Initiatives Division.

The Director of Government Relations will research, analyze and advise the Commissioner and other MIA staff on policy positions, legislation and regulation. This position will be responsible for coordinating legislative activities with the Governor's Office, the General Assembly, and the Director of Policy Initiatives; drafting and submitting legislation, amendments, and reports; and presenting MIA's policy positions to the General Assembly and the public. This position will testify before the General Assembly, communicate with the Governor's Office and work with members of the General Assembly on insurance issues. This position participates in the Department's legislative activities during Maryland's legislative session, to include staffing the Department's Annapolis Office, advocating for successful passage of the Department's legislative priorities and budget allowance, and coordinating with other State agencies, the Governor's Office, and lobbyists.

The position oversees the activities of the Government Relations and Regulatory Affairs Specialist. Statewide travel, attendance at Statewide conferences, and some evening meetings are required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Possession of a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.

Experience: At least three (3) years of recent professional experience in policy analysis, legislation, and/or insurance.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preference will be given to applicants who possess the following preferred qualification(s). Include clear and specific information on your application regarding your qualifications.
• Advanced degree in a related field.
• Working knowledge and experience with Maryland's legislative process and policy makers.
• Demonstrated experience in policy fields related to insurance.
• At least one (1) year experience supervising employees is preferred.
• Strong research and analytical abilities.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.
