Director of Finance to oversee daily financial operations and support the organization's financial planning and reporting.
Key Responsibilities
- Direct and oversee the organization's day-to-day accounting and financial activities
- Manage the full tuition billing and collection process, including account reconciliation
- Monitor cash activity, deposits, and monthly bank account reconciliations
- Prepare and review journal entries while investigating financial variances
- Maintain accurate records for donations, endowments, restricted funds, and other financial accounts
- Assist the CFO/COO with development and management of the annual operating budget
- Review payroll activity and ensure monthly payroll accounts are properly reconciled
- Coordinate the annual independent audit, including preparing supporting schedules and communicating with external auditors
- Work closely with the Advancement team to monitor revenue, expenses, and enrollment-related financial activity
- Oversee state-funded programs related to nursing, security, technology, and other applicable areas
- Develop financial reports and materials for board and committee meetings
- Provide leadership and oversight to accounting staff and ensure accurate, timely financial reporting
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting or a closely related field
- 5-7+ years of progressive accounting/finance experience, ideally within a comparable-sized organization
- Demonstrated background working in a nonprofit financial environment
- Prior experience working with external auditors and supporting annual audit processes
- Strong understanding of fund accounting, restricted funds, and nonprofit financial practices
- Previous experience leading, supervising, or mentoring accounting staff
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret financial data and identify variances
- Excellent organizational, communication, and problem-solving abilities
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel
- Experience with Blackbaud is a plus
- Experience within an independent school, educational institution, or similar nonprofit organization is highly preferred
