Position Overview
Primary Function of Organizational Unit The Division of Institutional Advancement advances a culture of philanthropy through the engagement of alumni, faculty, staff, students, parents and friends (both individually and in the corporate community) in support of the Institution's mission of preparing students to become global leaders and practitioners who transform communities. By using creative strategies to enhance the University's image, the office promotes the overall mission of North Carolina Central University to its external publics in order to solicit and acquire philanthropic support
Primary Purpose of Position The Director of Development is responsible for advancing philanthropic support for the School of Business by identifying, qualifying, cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding prospective major gift donors. The position manages a portfolio of prospects with a primary focus on building and strengthening the pipeline of major gift opportunities of $25,000 and above and increasing private support for the school's strategic priorities. The Director of Development works collaboratively with the Assistant Vice Chancellor for Development, Dean, department heads, faculty, staff, and volunteer advisory boards to develop and implement effective fundraising strategies and donor engagement opportunities. The position participates in regular formal strategy meetings with the Dean and Assistant Vice Chancellor to assess fundraising priorities, evaluate prospect activity, and coordinate development efforts. Reporting to the Assistant Vice Chancellor for Development, the Director plays a key role in expanding philanthropic partnerships and securing resources that support the mission and strategic goals of the School of Business.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities - Demonstrated ability to design and implement effective donor cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship strategies that support successful major gift fundraising and long-term donor relationships.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate credibly and effectively about higher education, the University's mission and strategic priorities, and the aspirations of the School of Business.
- Ability to work effectively in a results-driven environment that emphasizes measurable objectives, including established goals and performance metrics related to major gift activity, donor engagement, proposals, and dollars raised.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Outlook, Excel, and Word.
- Experience using Raiser's Edge or other advancement and donor management databases to document fundraising activities, donor interactions, proposals, and secured gifts.
- Ability to work effectively with diverse internal and external constituents while managing multiple priorities, balancing competing demands, and meeting established deadlines.
Minimum Education/Experience - Bachelor's degree required with three to five (3-5) years of experience in major gift fundraising, including a demonstrated record of successfully securing major gifts; or an equivalent combination of related and transferable experience gained through corporate, community, or philanthropic organizations.
- Proficiency in and use of Raiser's Edge is required for the accurate and timely documentation of fundraising activities, donor interactions, proposals, and secured gifts.
- Travel is required, including occasional overnight travel and evening and weekend work, to support donor cultivation, engagement, fundraising activities, and University events.

Primary Responsibilities and Duties
Function Administrative
Describe the specific tasks and responsibilities related to the function. - Manage a portfolio of approximately 75-125 prospective and current donors, with responsibility for identifying, qualifying, cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding individuals with the capacity and interest to support the School of Business.
- Develop and maintain personal relationships with prospective donors through direct outreach and in-person visits and, when appropriate, engage corporate representatives and foundation officers to cultivate philanthropic partnerships and secure major gifts for the School of Business.
- Collaborate closely with the Dean and Assistant Vice Chancellor for Development to coordinate donor strategies, align fundraising efforts with institutional and School of Business priorities, and maximize opportunities for major gift support.
Function Strategic Leadership and Administration
Describe the specific tasks and responsibilities related to the function. - Meet established performance metrics based on documented meaningful engagement with qualified prospects, the development and submission of gift proposals, and secured gifts, in alignment with annual fiscal year fundraising goals.
- Serve as an integral member of the School of Business leadership and advancement team, working closely with the Dean, School leadership, faculty, and staff to develop and implement effective fundraising strategies that support the School's strategic priorities.
- Participate in strategic engagement opportunities that strengthen relationships with prospective donors, alumni, corporate partners, and other stakeholders and advance philanthropic support for the School of Business.
Function Collaboration and Campus Engagement
Describe the specific tasks and responsibilities related to the function. - Assist with the oversight and engagement of the School of Business Advisory Council, supporting volunteer leadership activities that strengthen relationships, increase engagement, and cultivate philanthropic support for the School.
- Work closely with the Assistant Vice Chancellor for Development to plan, coordinate, and execute fundraising projects and initiatives that support the strategic priorities of the School of Business.
- Collaborate with colleagues across Institutional Advancement to ensure coordinated fundraising strategies, effective donor engagement, and alignment of development activities with broader University advancement goals.
Function Planning and Organizing Work
Describe the specific tasks and responsibilities related to the function. - Attend School of Business, departmental, University, alumni, and development-related functions and events as appropriate to support donor engagement, relationship building, cultivation, stewardship, and advancement of the school's fundraising priorities.
