Job Summary

We are seeking a Director of Advanced Practice for our pediatrics service line at the Duke University Hospital in Durham, NC. The Director of Advanced Practice provides strategic and operational leadership for Advanced Practice Providers (APPs) across assigned divisions and/or departments. Reporting to the Chair of the Department of Pediatrics, the Director supports the development and implementation of clinical initiatives requiring high-level collaboration and coordination. This role partners closely with departmental leadership, health system leadership, advanced practice leadership, and operational teams to ensure the delivery of high-quality, evidence-based, and patient-centered care across the organization.

The Director of Advanced Practice ensures that all activities and operations associated with Advanced Practice Providers in their assigned areas align with departmental and health system strategic goals; internal and external credentialing and regulatory requirements; and evidenced based practice.

The Director also serves as an expert resource for the department on requirements related to licensure, regulatory, and practice issues for advanced practice provider positions

Primary hours will be Monday through Friday, day shift, with hours flexible to meet the needs of the patients and department.

Job Duties & Responsibilities

Quality and Performance Improvement
  • Assesses and monitors clinical needs across divisions and department to identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Collaborates with clinical and operational leadership to ensure quality, efficiency, and effectiveness in programs and services.
  • Provides strategic direction for growth opportunities, expansion, and optimization of APP practice.
  • Promotes collaboration in setting patient care goals and optimizing the patient and family experience.
  • Supports and facilitates the organization's quality and performance improvement initiatives.
  • Identifies and implements quality indicators aligned with organizational priorities.


Regulatory Compliance
  • Ensures compliance with all regulatory, accreditation, and reporting requirements in collaboration with department and advanced practice leadership.
  • Monitors operations to maintain readiness for licensure and accreditation surveys.
  • Interprets and communicates applicable regulatory standards to clinical and operational teams.


Leadership and Professional Development
  • Demonstrates core leadership values, including open communication, mutual respect, and collaboration.
  • Models organizational values related to patient care, healthy work environment, education, and continuous improvement.
  • Collaborates with leadership teams on APP recruitment, hiring, evaluation, and retention strategies.

Clinical Practice

Administrative and Financial Management
  • Partners with departmental, health system, and advanced practice leadership to support strategic planning, and clinical program development• Collaborates with finance and operations teams to ensure strong financial performance and resource optimization.
  • Works with billing and compliance teams to ensure accurate documentation, coding, and revenue capture in alignment with regulatory requirements.
  • Implements and monitors compliance policies and procedures related to APP practice.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned to support organizational goals and objectives.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Demonstrated success in a leadership role overseeing APPs within a service, division, or department.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficiency with electronic health record (EHR) systems and digital documentation workflows.
  • Strong understanding of medical principles, procedures, and clinical operations.
  • Proven ability to foster collaboration across clinical and administrative teams.
  • The ability to work with all types of individuals in multiple settings and locations and to promote diversity in the workplace.
  • Prior leadership experience within a complex healthcare environment. Knowledge of necessary regulatory bodies including but not limited to The Joint Commission, North Carolina Board of Nursing, and North Carolina Medical Board.


Job Eligibility Requirements

Education
  • Nurse Practitioners: Work requires completion of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program, with a Master's degree in Nursing.
  • Physician Assistants: Work requires completion of an accredited Physician Assistant program, with a Master's degree.


Certification
  • BLS required.


License
  • Nurse Practitioners: Must have current or compact RN licensure & NP approval to practice in the state of North Carolina. BLS required. National certification as a NP required.
  • Physician Assistants: Must be licensed in the state of NC, and be certified as a Physician Assistant by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants. BLS required.
  • DEA licensure with full prescriptive authority required.


Experience
  • Minimum of 3-5 years experience as an advanced practice provider with proven leadership experience and evidence of operations / administrative responsibilities OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
