Position Summary:

The Director of Accounting will oversee all financial reporting, compliance, and accounting operations for a real estate development firm specializing in affordable housing. This role ensures the accuracy of financial records, adherence to regulatory requirements, and the effective management of accounting functions to support the organization's mission. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in real estate accounting, affordable housing finance, and government funding programs (e.g., LIHTC, HUD, HOME, CDBG) and expertise in budgeting.

Key Responsibilities (Essential Duties and Functions):

Financial Reporting & Compliance:

  • Oversee the preparation of monthly/quarterly financial statements in compliance with regulatory standards.
  • Ensure compliance with HUD, LIHTC, and other affordable housing program reporting requirements.
  • Coordinate annual audits, including external financial and compliance audits.
  • Maintain accounting policies and procedures to ensure financial integrity and compliance.


Accounting Operations:

  • Supervise the accounting team, including accounts payable working closely with the accounts receivable team, and assisting with general ledger functions.
  • Manage monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reporting, budgeting and reconciliations.
  • Oversee and lead cash flow management, budgeting, and forecasting processes.
  • Ensure proper cost allocations for lease up projects, including construction draws and capitalization.
  • Coordinate with external audits and manage the audit process.
  • Ensure compliance with tax reporting requirements.


Strategic Leadership & Process Improvement:

  • Identify opportunities to improve financial processes and implement best practices.
  • Provide strategic insights and recommendations to senior leadership on financial planning and risk management.
  • Mentor and develop accounting staff to enhance team performance and expertise.
  • Train, mentor and coach all MBC employees regarding processes and SOP's related to accounting to enhance financial acumen.
  • Remain updated on industry trends and regulations to ensure the company's accounting practices remain compliant.
  • Participate in corporate policy development as a member of the MBM Executive team.
  • Collaborate with other departments to streamline processes, improve financial efficiency, and ensure financial accuracy of financial data.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • 10+ years of accounting experience, with at least 5 years in a leadership role.
  • Strong knowledge of real estate development accounting, affordable housing finance, and regulatory compliance.
  • Experience with HUD programs, LIHTC compliance, and financial reporting for government-funded projects.
  • Proficiency in accounting software (e.g., Yardi, MRI, SAGE, or similar) and advanced Excel skills.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and problem-solving abilities and the ability to meet tight deadlines.


Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, Finance, or related field (CPA or MBA preferred).


Additional Requirement:

  • Must have a valid driver's license.

  • This job operates in a clerical office setting. This role routinely utilizes standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers/printers, and filing cabinets.
  • This position requires sitting, bending, stooping, or standing as necessary. Our offices are equipped with electronic desks for standing or sitting.
