Full Job Description

About the Role

Marketing at Step runs on data. Every acquisition channel, lifecycle campaign, rewards drop, and measurement decision depends on clean, connected, well-modeled data flowing between our product, our warehouse, and a dozen marketing platforms. Today, much of that work lands on engineering. We're hiring a Director, Marketing Technology, to own it end-to-end.

This is a deeply technical, hands-on role for someone with a software or data engineering background who wants to apply that skill set to growth. You'll be the architect and operator of Step's marketing technology stack: owning our ad channel and attribution integrations, managing our vendor ecosystem (Segment, AppsFlyer, Braze, Funnel, and others), building the data models and analytical tooling the marketing team runs on, and shipping the monthly rewards and offers that drive engagement. You'll act as the bridge between Marketing, Product, and Engineering taking on the technical work that currently pulls engineers away from the core product, and raising the bar on what marketing can measure, automate, and personalize.

You'll start as a hands-on individual contributor with the opportunity to build and lead a marketing technology team as the function scales.
In this role, you will:

Own the marketing technology stack
  • Own the architecture, roadmap, and day-to-day operation of Step's martech ecosystem including CDP, MMP, lifecycle messaging, data aggregation, and analytics tooling along with the documentation, QA, and governance standards that keep it reliable and privacy-compliant
  • Manage all marketing technology partners (Segment, AppsFlyer, Braze, Funnel, and similar), including evaluation, implementation, optimization, and contract/renewal input

Build and optimize ad channel and measurement integrations
  • Configure, validate, and maintain integrations with paid channels (Meta, Google, TikTok, and similar), including server-side conversion APIs, event schemas, setup counting methods, attribution windows, and first-party audience syncs
  • Own attribution and mobile measurement (AppsFlyer/Segment): SKAN/postback configuration, conversion windows, deduplication, and channel-level data quality
  • Partner on GA4 implementation including event taxonomy, funnel conversion configuration, and custom reporting; leveraging GA4 data to fill attribution gaps across channels and inform incrementality analysis

Be the data backbone of the marketing team
  • Build and maintain the pipelines and data models that power marketing reporting, audience segmentation, and campaign measurement with identity, event, and audience definitions kept consistent across product, warehouse, and activation platforms
  • Develop self-serve analytical tools, dashboards, and automations so marketers can answer their own questions (ie. spend pacing, funnel conversion, LTV, incrementality)

Ship marketing programs
  • Own the technical build of Step's monthly rewards and offers program end to end targeting logic, delivery, tracking, and post-campaign readout
  • Support lifecycle and CRM campaign execution in Braze: triggers and data feeds

Partner across the company
  • Serve as marketing's technical counterpart to Product, Engineering, and Data scoping requests, setting priorities, and taking build work off engineering's plate
You might thrive in this role if you have:
  • 7+ years across software engineering, data engineering, or marketing technology, with meaningful time spent as a hands-on engineer
  • Proven experience owning a modern martech stack at a consumer company: CDP (Segment or similar), MMP (AppsFlyer, Adjust, or Branch), and lifecycle platforms (Braze or similar)
  • Strong SQL and working proficiency in a scripting language (Python or JavaScript); comfortable with APIs, webhooks, event-driven architectures, and cloud data warehouses
  • Deep understanding of mobile and web attribution: conversion APIs, SKAdNetwork, postbacks, deduplication, and incrementality
  • A clear communicator who bridges marketing, engineering, and executive audiences
  • You are hungry for action and you'd rather ship a working solution this week than a perfect one next quarter
  • Experience operating martech at larger scale, ideally through viral moments or campaign-driven traffic spikes
Some of the technology we use:
  • Kotlin
  • gRPC
  • Protocol Buffers
  • Dagger
  • Postgres
  • JOOQ
  • BigQuery
  • Kubernetes
  • Terraform
Logistics

Location: Remote (US) or San Mateo, CA, with occasional travel for team offsites and key meetings

Reports to: Chief Marketing Officer

Education: Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience

We encourage you to apply even if you don't meet every single qualification. Strong candidates rarely check every box, and we'd rather meet you than miss you.
